🦷 What is a COHAT in pets?
A COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) is a professional dental procedure performed under general anaesthesia to fully assess and treat a pet’s oral health.
🔍 What happens during a COHAT?
•Pre-anaesthesia blood work to ensure healthy organ function and helps us plan their anesthesia and the medications we use before, during and after their procedure.
•Full mouth examination (including under the gumline)
•Dental charting (recording each tooth’s condition)
•Dental X‑rays to detect hidden issues
•Ultrasonic scaling to remove plaque and tartar
•Polishing to smooth enamel and slow plaque build-up
•Ongoing plan for treatment of dental disease, if they require extractions, we can provide a more accurate estimate and book them in for oral surgery 4 - 8 weeks later if required with our staged dental process.
💉 Why anaesthesia?
Anaesthesia ensures your pet is pain-free, still, and safe, allowing a thorough and stress-free examination—something that isn’t possible while awake.
❤️ Why is it important?
Dental disease can cause:
Pain and infection
Bad breath
Difficulty eating
Spread of bacteria to organs (heart, kidneys, liver)
Early treatment keeps your pet comfortable, healthy, and happy.
✅ Bottom line: A COHAT is the gold standard for maintaining your pet’s dental health—not just a clean, but a complete oral care procedure
