Life in a beehive can be pretty brutal. There is very little honey in the area where this hive is, like much of the southern highlands, and the worker bees have decided the drones are too much of a drain of resources to stay. This means the boys have been kicked out of this hive including the pupae.

While in Port Arthur, Tasmania we spotted bumblebees amongst the gardens. Tasmania is the only place in Australia that has bumblebees introduced.
