It's nearly that time of year again, when barley grass starts to cause havoc in the region.

Their awns stick to fur, and can pass easily through the skin, they are capable of invading your dog's body through the feet, ears, eyes, mouth, or actually, any body surface.

Prevention can be key - at risk animals should have regular checks of the coat, foot pads, ears and eyes. Clipping fur as short as possible (especially around the feet) and brushing can also help to identify the awns before they become a problem.

Your pet may also be trying to tell you they have one. Watch for:
- head shaking
- excessive licking
- swelling, discharging draining tracts

Early intervention can prevent extensive costs of investigation of grass awns.

Veterinary Emergency After-Hours Notice

We know emergencies don’t always happen during business hours, and we want to ensure your animals receive the care they need when it matters most.

We also need to look after our staff, who work tirelessly to provide high quality veterinary care for our patients. Working in the veterinary industry is very rewarding, but carrying the emotional burden for pets and owners can be exhausting, potentially leading to compassion fatigue, high stress, and potentially burnout. Veterinarians are up to 67% more likely to suffer work-related burnout and have almost four times the su***de rate of the Australian population. We love our pets, but we also love our wonderful staff.

As a rural veterinary clinic, our team provides limited after-hours emergency consultations. We ask for your understanding as we balance patient needs with staff wellbeing.

Who we can help after hours:
Active clients: if your animal has been seen by our staff within the previous 12-24 months, we consider you an active client. We will do our best to provide after-hours emergency care to your animal if they require it.

Who we don’t see after hours:
Non clients: if you are not an active client, we may not be able to see your animal after-hours. In these cases, we urge you to contact your regular veterinarian, and if they are unavailable after-hours, you will be directed to the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital.

After-hours contact is strictly for urgent, life- or welfare-threatening emergencies only. All other enquiries must be made during business hours. For privacy and efficiency, all communication is to occur via the clinic phone line — not through staff personally.
We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for abusive or disrespectful behaviour toward our team.

Please know that while we do want to help everyone, we also want to keep our team healthy, rested and able to provide quality care for our clients.

We thank the broader community in helping us to continue to service the community for their veterinary needs.

Sincerely,
The Team at Yoogali Veterinary Centre

Did you know that one unspayed female cat can have up to three litters per year? This could mean a single female cat could produce 36+ kittens per year, who then start breeding from as young as four months. Their population growth is exponential! 🙀

Desexing cats has multiple benefits: 😻
Prevents litters entirely, halting exponential population growth.
Reduces euthanasia pressure on shelters by lowering intake numbers.
Supports ecosystem balance, protecting native wildlife.
Improves cats’ health and behaviour, reducing roaming, fighting, spraying, and risk of disease or traffic injury.

The true cost here is not desexing cats. 😿
