A REMINDER TO BOOK PARVOVIRUS VACCINATIONS
Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that can be fatal. The virus attacks the lining of the small intestines leading to vomiting and diarrhoea that often contains blood. These symptoms can lead to severe dehydration, sepsis and death. Early detection and treatment is extremely important.
Parvovirus can survive for years in the environment which makes its spread hard to control. The virus particles are shed in the faeces of infected animals. Dogs can very easily come into contact with the virus particles for example, when sniffing the ground on walks. The virus can also be transferred on peopleβs shoes, dog leashes or bedding.
Thankfully there is a vaccine that works well along with other precautionary measures to stop your puppy or dog from getting parvo.
Puppies need three booster vaccinations 4 weeks apart. Our current recommendation for puppies is:
π 1st vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age,
π 2nd vaccination at 10-12 weeks of age, and
π 3rd vaccination at 14-16 weeks of age.
Adult dogs need a booster vaccination EVERY YEAR after their initial puppy vaccinations.
