Can never rehash some of our educational posts enough! They’re all located in our pinned posts and are designed to help you get the most out of your eggs 🩷💚
💙Being early in the season, don’t forget to check your incubators! If they’ve had a break over Autumn and Winter, please check that their temperature is accurate and that their turning motor works.
💔There are so many budget incubator options on the market now and NONE should be used without a calibrated thermometer. There are so many sad stories in all the poultry groups about their newly purchased funky brand machine not hatching well. You get the quality you pay for, unfortunately, and many of those machines aren’t fit for purpose. If you’re spending good money in eggs, start with a correctly functioning machine 🙏🏻
🧡Even quality incubators need regular temperature checking for best results 🙏🏻 they can be sensitive to ambient temperature, fluff in the fan/motor etc etc. always give them a good clean and check them over when firing them up again for the season.
🩶Yes - it’s 2025 but Aus post can still damage eggs no matter how well we pack. Some things never change! So please make sure to candle them when you receive them, track them as they travel to you and collect ASAP - don’t leave them in the sun or sitting in the PO over the weekend. It’s always best to set them within 1-2 days of receiving them, don’t plan to store them.
💜Best of luck and Happy Hatching!💜
“I’ve received my eggs - what do I do now?!”
Aah yes, the moment has arrived and the postie has delivered. Now what?! 😱
1) Take the eggs carefully out of the packaging and into an egg carton
2) Take a good photo - maybe even a couple! The writing on the eggs is on the pointy side usually - so take at least one with the writing facing upwards as it’ll help us to identify the chicks later if necessary
3) Check the eggs for any hairline cracks, candle them in the dark to check for any postal damage. Saddled airsacs are ok - fully detached with bubbles are a loss. If unsure, set the egg and check again in a week
4) No need to rest, pop them into a preheated, temperature-checked incubator. It’s preferred that the eggs are incubated within a day of being received. If storing for longer periods, keep them in a cool place and tilt a few times a day. Check our 🩵Incubation PSA🩵 pinned post for our tried and tested incubation method
5) Record the date you set them on your phone, or write it on the shell with a soft pencil, especially if incubating other eggs at the same time. That is Day 0 (not day 1)
6) Candle on Day 7 and discard anything that’s not developing. If in doubt, leave in longer or take a photo/video and send it to us
7) When hatching, if you want to keep the colours 🩷🩵💚🤎💛 separate, pop the eggs into small laundry-delicates or fruit fly exclusion bags. The eggs can hatch in those and the chicks can be tagged with coloured leg bands for identification
PS - we don’t think it necessary to let eggs sit for a day, but if you choose to do it, it should not be detrimental; we do not recommend letting them wait for too long before being set - if you have a date in mind please let us know when making the order or as soon as practicable - get the incubator first and eggs second
