We're delighted to welcome Professor Simon Bailey and Skye from the University of Melbourne Veterinary School back to Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary for session dedicated to two of the most common and challenging conditions affecting horses and ponies.

Come along and hear about award-winning research into laminitis and equine endocrine disorders, including the latest developments in our understanding, treatment and management of these conditions.

This is a wonderful opportunity for horse and pony owners to learn directly from a leading equine researcher, ask questions and gain practical knowledge to help manage horses affected by Cushing's disease (PPID), EMS and laminitis.

Whether you're caring for a laminitic pony, managing an older horse with Cushing's or simply want to learn more, everyone is welcome.

Places are limited to just 20 attendees due to the size of our room. We simply ask that you send us a private message to reserve your seat so we can manage numbers.

Never a dull moment as an equine vet!

C A S T R A T I O N S

Did you know that while castrations are one of the most frequently performed elective surgical procedures, they are also associated with a high complication rate?

A 2024 study compiled and analysed the complication rate and risk factors associated with castrations.

Common complications were-
🚩 swelling (up to 70% of cases)
🚩 infection
🚩 excessive bleeding
🚩 evisceration
🚩 continued stallion-like behaviour

There are a number of ways that these risks can be reduced. Follow along to find out how you can prepare your c**t for his big day!

This beautiful boy recently came into the care of horse_shepherd. He was born with a congenital deformity called Wry Nose causing lateral deviation of the muzzle and misalignment of the jaws.
This results in poor dental occlusion, abnormal tooth wear, and the development of dental overgrowths and sharp enamel points. Regular dental care every 6 months is required to maintain comfort and effective chewing.

Unfortunately, Twister also had a diastema with feed packing around one tooth which took a bit of time to clear. Thank goodness for a crush and headsling to make this a bit easier on Twister (and me)!
