Connemara Pony Breeders' Society of Australia

Connemara Pony Breeders' Society of Australia The Australian Connemara Pony Breeders' Society is affiliated with the International Society based in Ireland and is a sister society to other countries.

ABOUT the CONNEMARA PONY

The Connemara Pony is native to that part of Ireland, west of Galway, known as CONNEMARA. The environment is harsh, lashed with gales from the Atlantic and consisting mainly of bog, mountain terrain with granite outcrops and scree, small, sparsely scattered grassed areas interspersed with granite outcrops. Ponies graze this land and feed on grasses, herbs, reeds, rushes,

bog plants and, where access is available, they feed on seaweed which is rich in minerals and Iodine. Shelter is difficult to find and the ponies utilise the deep gullies of the mountains, rocky outcrops and the shrubbery, where it exists. This environment requires a hardy, surefooted and frugal pony for survival. This Pony is the CONNEMARA PONY. In 1963 Dr Fred Wiltshire imported the Connemara Pony Stallion ISLAND KING. With this import began the Connemara Pony breed in this country. The first purebred Connemara foal born in Australia was Connemara Park Kenneth, (Island Prince (cps 136) x Ardan (1001) (cps 2465)) in 1966, and with him the first Australian Connemara Stud Prefix. In 1966 Connemara Park Ann, (Island King (1) (cps 122) x Ardan (1001) (cps 2465) the first purebred filly was born and she was the first Australian bred purebred. Dr Wiltshire's original reason for importing the Connemara was to improve the Australian Pony. He hoped to add movement, bone and scope to this breed and Island King was in fact registered as an Australian Pony Stallion. Since that day in 1963 the Connemara Pony Breeders' Society of Australia Inc. has continued to grow with Studs in every State of Australia and many ponies being moved around the nation. Milestones have been achieved and achievements have gone beyond expectations in the stock that has been bred and is now being bred by the various breeders. Australian Connemara ponies have been and are being sought by overseas buyers, and with the Australian Society being granted "Approved" Status within the International Society of Connemara Breeders this trend is expected to escalate. The latest import in 1999 being Castle Baron, (Abbeyleix Owen x Castle Dame), imported by Glenormiston Stud in Queensland. This Stallion has his first stock on the ground and it looks like the tradition will continue. Interest is being resurrected and new breeders are appearing on the scene, but former breeders have also discovered a new interest in the Society with the addition of this new bloodline.

The recipient of the Sue McTaggart Broodmare Award is Glenormiston Flashy Diamond. She is one of the last offspring of Domo Cavallo Praize out of Glenormiston Lizzie Diamond and bred by Sue Clarke at Glenormiston Stud. Lizzie Diamond was one of Sue’s favourite mares as she was a granddaughter of Rebel Wind.
As a young Class 1 mare, Flashy was leased by Sue to Charles Sturt University when they chose to develop a Connemara Breeding program and she spent several years on campus, enabling vet students to gain practical experience with horses and also breeding the first Connemara foals to bear the CSU prefix. Her daughter CSU Cullinan was competed to Elementary level dressage and was the
undefeated Puissance winner for several years at Aonach. Flashy was a winner of hunter classes at the inaugural showcase held at CSU. She was returned to Sue in foal to Spinway Comet and foaled a c**t, Glenormiston Flashy Comet, who as a Class 1 stallion sired 9 registered pure and partbred ponies. Comet sired the lovely young stallion Orion, who has already himself sired 20 registerd pure and partbred connemaras. Comet is also the sire of the 2023 CPBSA South Australian Ridden award winner, Innisfree A Cheeky Pinot, owned by Carol Benassy. After being gelded, Comet has had a
successful competition career with a young rider, winning the CPBSA Tasmanian Ridden Connemara Award and championships at the Tasmanian HOY. Both Comet and Orion are valuable contributors to the Australian pony gene pool through the combination of Flashy and Spinway Comet’s bloodlines.
Flashy was purchased from Sue as a foundation broodmare for Arden stud and she has produced 4 foals and is expecting her fifth in December. Her two purebred daughters (x Gneevebrack Storm and x Glenormiston Turlough) have been retained as broodmares; her part bred daughter also. Her son, Arden Peridot was awarded the 2022 CPBSA National Partbred Award for his success in competitions ranging from show hack to show jumping with his junior rider, Jessica Cheal.
Glenormiston Flashy Diamond has 37 descendants.
She represents all to be valued in our Connemara broodmares
– good health, beauty, outstanding conformation, productivity,
ease of temperament and the ability to leave a legacy for
future Connemara
lovers.

Congratulations to Dromara Park Rupert on receiving the 2023 Jo Heard Memorial Award.
Rupert has proven himself to be the ultimate all-round pony,
family pony and child’s pony; he really is so adaptable to carry John (45yo man) or Sophie (13yo girl) happily and have a go at anything. No only is he happy to have a go at anything, but he does very well at everything he tries. He has responded so well to all the
showjumping training with Sophie, so much so he is instilling great confidence in her to jump higher, knowing he won’t stop at the jumps and will pick up the speed she needs. He will also turn on a dime (from his sporting and mounted games practice) so she can really cut corners and do well in jump offs.
From his early days with Sue and Ann, then moving around a bit and having quite a few people put miles on him, to finding himself in an inexperience horse home, to landing with us, he had a bit of an unsettled last few years. He has now landed in his forever home with us, and he knows it. We think he is an awesome example of a Connemara Gelding, who is the perfect kids pony for Sophie, yet strong and willing enough to be a great all round family
pony.
This year he has done the following:
Cattle muster (adult)
Trail riding (both adult and child)
20km Endurance Race (adult)
Dressage (both adult and child)
Pony Club (both adult and child)
Interschools (child, including State Interschools)
Pony camps (child)
Sporting and mounted games (adult and child)
Aonach (adult and child)
Showjumping (adult and child)
Most recently Rupert and Sophie won the Best Junior at Sydney Showjumping Club Spring
Championships, winning the 75cm, coming 2 nd in the 65cm and 6 th in the 85cm.

Congratulations to the 2023 recipient of the Sue Clarke Memorial Award - Highland DJ owned and campaigned by Kayla Lenehan
Highland DJ is by the Connemara Stallion – Kahean Jimmy Diamond out of Karaoke Miss hence the name Kayla chose, DJ.
DJ was an exuberant youngster but always displayed
sensational movement. DJ has given Kayla so many accolades as a rider and taken her through pony club to Level 1
competing at State Level in both Showjumping and Horse Trials qualifying for National Level. DJ won the CPBSA National Award under saddle in 2017, and was a member of Equestrian Victoria
Hygain Showjump Squad 2016-2020. He has competed in mounted games, played polocrosse and showjumped to 1.20m throughout Victoria and South Australia. In EA Horse Trials
DJ has placed many times at 1*. Now with an FEI Passport and competing 2*S he placed at Geelong Horse Trials earlier this year and completed all phases of
EA2*L Melbourne International Horse Trials where they completed all phases. DJ is only 15.2hh but has a big heart and has often been used by Kayla's students for lessons and trail rides and he is often the support horse as for the youngsters that Kayla breaks in.
He has a dedicated fan base and several fans have commented that they have purchased Connemara ponies as a result of watching DJ's talent and attitude.
Congratulations to Highland DJ on this award, recognising your contribution to the breed.
