🐕 Breed traits effect a dogs personality characteristics. There is that age old debate amongst people that “it’s all how you raise them” and I agree that does play a huge factor BUT it is not the only factor. Genetics do play a role. Pure bred dogs are bred for certain reasons, to do a particular job and those traits can have advantages but can also have disadvantages.
🧬 I got Bell DNA tested when she was young because I wanted to know what I was getting into not knowing Bells breeds. It was suggested to me by my friend and mentor Stephanie, owner of The Dignified Dog in Canada, to do it with an at home swab kit. Knowing what makes up Bell has been so helpful as she grew up and even to this day. The DNA test came back as: 1/4 German Shepherd, 1/4 Great Pyrenees, 1/8 American Staffordshire Terrier and 1/8 St. Bernard.
🎥 I find this video of Bell very interesting because it shows off some of her breed traits. You can see by her body posture (leaning forwards, stiff muscles, furiously sniffing) and the small flinch, that she is very wary of smelling the package of dog food BUT she still wants to go smell it anyway and investigate what it is.
🐶 German Shepherds - they were initially used as herding dogs because of their intelligence but eventually started being used as guard dogs and search dogs because of their curiosity, fierce loyalty towards their family and sense of smell. People started breeding them to enhance these characteristics! When not bred properly they can become overprotective of their family and territory, and become fearful of the unknown instead of curious.
🐶 Great Pyrenees - have always been used as livestock guardians, even to this day! They are confident in nature, very loyal and known to be very gentle towards family members. One thing people often forget with this breed is that they are specifically bred to protect their flock from predators. This can have a downside as they can end up extremely territorial around their humans or home and often struggle with leash reactivity.
🐩 Often people will get a dog breed they like the look of but don’t do research to understand the characteristic that come with it; whether it’s pure bred or not. I didn’t know what I was getting into with Bell, I didn’t know she would become a sassy, independent dog that like to test boundaries!
