Mouse Colour Genetics in Australia - Lilac, Champagne, and Lavender
This past week we had the opportunity to spend some time with the mice of Rainbow Magic Rattery (who have taken over our variegated line). While we were there, drinking coffee and playing with mice (and rats), these youngsters caught my eye.
These three are a lovely representation of some of the possible dilutions of black (allele name: non-agouti, symbol: a):
1. Lilac (blue and chocolate diluted black)
Genotype: a/a b/b d/d P/* C/*
QRF Standard:A dark metallic silver, neither too blue nor too brown. Eye black.
NSWFRS Standard: A dark metallic silver, neither too blue nor too brown. Eyes black.
NMC Standard: Eye black. An even pinky shade of lilac
2. Champagne (chocolate and pink-eyed diluted black)
Genotype: a/a b/b D/* p/p C/*
QRF Standard: A warm, creamy yellow. Eye pink.
NSWFRS Standard: A clean warm beige with a pink tint. Eyes pink.
NMC Standard: Eye pink. The colour should be that of champagne silk with a pinkish tinge, free from mealiness and well carried out under.
3. Lavender (blue, chocolate, and pink-eyed diluted black)
Genotype: a/a b/b d/d p/p C/*
QRF Standard: A pale creamy colour, neither too grey nor too brown. Should be paler than silver and almost pinkish in hue. Eye pink.
NSWFRS Standard: A pale, pastel grey with a subtle pinkish hue. Eyes pink.
There are several other dilutions of black (chocolate, blue, silver), however this was a prime opportunity to photograph three of these pretty colours together. These babies are only a little over two weeks old, so their adult colours will be a little different.
