⚠️ Hendra Virus Confirmed in South-East Queensland (Lowood Area) ⚠️
We are saddened to hear of a confirmed case of Hendra virus in the Lowood region, where tragically, a horse has lost its life. Our thoughts are with the horse’s owner and the veterinary team who attended the case—these situations are incredibly difficult and stressful for all involved.
What Can You Do to Protect Your Horse and Yourself?
✅ Vaccinate your horse — this remains the most effective way to protect your horse and safeguard anyone who may come into contact with a sick animal.
✅ Keep vaccinations up to date — staying current reduces treatment delays and protects your horse from this often fatal disease.
🦠 Why Vaccination Matters:
Horses that are unvaccinated face limited treatment options if they become unwell. Vaccinated horses can receive prompt treatment without the delays caused by mandatory exclusion testing for Hendra virus.
🔮Common Myths About Hendra Virus:
🚫 “My horse doesn’t leave the property, so it’s safe.”
Horses can contract the virus from infected flying foxes, even without travelling.
🚫 “We don’t see flying foxes, so we’re not at risk.”
Flying foxes often pass through areas unnoticed.
🚫 “If food and water are undercover, we’re safe.”
While this is important, there have still been cases where horses became infected despite these precautions.
