Paws & Reward

Paws & Reward Helping pets and their people thrive through positive training. My training philosophy begins with kindness to both people and animals. Everyone wins.

Small group classes in Blackwood and Flagstaff Hill, plus personalised in-home consults for dogs and cats, supporting real-life skills and lasting results. No one will be yelled at for not knowing what to do or making mistakes. My focus is on helping you understand what your dog or cat wants and needs, while also equipping your pet with the skills he or she needs to be comfortable and happy in you

r family. The goal is for you and your pet to enjoy fulfilled and enriched lives together. My training focuses on three areas to achieve behavioural change: management, relationships and training:

- Management: I will set your pet up for success. This involves short and long term strategies, such as crates, gates, exercise, vet visits etc. This helps prevent problems from developing.

- Relationship: refers to the pet-owner relationship being a partnership rather than being viewed as one party dominating another. Think of it as you and your pet being in a dance. As the owners, it is your job to give clear instructions to your dog or cat. This will avoid confusion, which often leads to stress.

- Training: I use positive reinforcement training because research has consistently shown it to be the most effective way to teach an animal the desired behaviours and learn new tasks. Positive reinforcement involves reinforcing desirable behaviours and ignoring, redirecting or preventing undesirable behaviour. This training strategy makes any situation better because it fills in the gaps for your pet on what you want her or him to do instead of what you don't want her or him to do. To do this, we’ll use anything your individual pet would welcome more of (food, toys, attention, petting, etc.). Behaviour you like is matched with things your dog likes. I don’t have a use for choke chains, electric collars or any other equipment that needs the dog to fail in order to serve its purpose of “correcting.”

Cooperative Care Group Class
🗓 THIS SATURDAY May 16th – 10:30am
📍 Blackwood Uniting Church

Winnie the Groodle's favourite things:
Zoomies? Yes.
Rolling in the grass? Absolutely.
Collecting every grass seed possible? Definitely 🙈🌱

Every Oodle owner knows their pup is usually a magnet for collecting things in their coat.

But when those paws, ears, tail and muzzle need checking, Cooperative Care can help turn stressful handling into a calm pamper session.

Avoid the stress AND the vet bill!

Class starts this Saturday at 10:30am — limited spots available! 💛

Raising a puppy can feel… a lot 🫠

One minute they’re asleep in your lap looking adorable…
The next they’re biting your ankles, zooming through the house with a stolen sock, barking at nothing, and peeing on the rug they *just* peed on 20 minutes ago 😅

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or wondering if you’re “doing it wrong” — you are absolutely not alone.

Puppy College is designed to help you navigate real life with your puppy using positive, practical, force-free training.

We focus on the things that actually matter in everyday life:
🐾 Calmness around distractions
🐾 Walking nicely on lead
🐾 Leaving things that don't belong to them
🐾 Settling on a mat
🐾 Puppy biting & overarousal
🐾 Building confidence
🐾 Raising a dog you can genuinely enjoy living with

✨ Small classes (max 6 puppies)
✨ Indoor training option in Blackwood and Flagstaff Hill
✨ Supportive, judgement-free environment
✨ Real-life skills — not military obedience

Our next Puppy College starts Saturday 16 May at 9am and spots are limited.

Supporting small business has never been more important ❤️

I know times are tough, and I completely understand why people look for the cheapest option. But every time you choose to support a small business, you are supporting a real person, a family, a dream, and often someone working incredibly long hours just trying to make things sustainable long term.

Maybe it’s buying your bread from Akkerman & Dyer: Wood Oven Bakery and Kitchen instead of Woolworths.
Maybe it’s training at Redefine Fitness Blackwood instead of a big commercial gym.
Maybe it's buying your dog treats and food from Urban Pet Food instead of Petstock.
Maybe it’s choosing a local café, dog trainer, artist, photographer, groomer, cleaner, or boutique store instead of a huge chain.

Yes — sometimes there is a slight price increase. But even supporting ONE small business can make a huge difference.

In the dog training world especially, I’ve seen so many incredible, talented colleagues forced to close their businesses lately. Big companies like Petbarn and Petstock can offer low-cost group classes because they have massive advertising budgets, entire marketing teams, graphic designers, and huge brand recognition behind them.

Small businesses don’t have that.

Most of the time, our marketing is created at 5am before the kids wake up… or late at night after everyone has gone to bed. It’s just us — juggling clients, admin, emails, social media, bookkeeping, continuing education, family life, and everything in between.

We do it because we genuinely care about what we offer and the people we help.

If you’ve ever supported a small business — thank you. Truly.
And if you’d like to help, some of the best things you can do are:

✨ Share their posts
✨ Recommend them to friends
✨ Leave a review
✨ Engage with their content
✨ Tag them when people ask for recommendations
✨ Choose local where you can

Word of mouth keeps so many of us going.

We want to still be here in years to come, helping our community and doing what we love — but that’s only possible with your support ❤️

A dog’s behaviour doesn’t happen in a vacuum 💛🐶

Just like us, dogs have emotional needs that need to be “filled up” every day. When their emotional cup is full, they’re often better able to cope with stress, learn new skills, and navigate the world calmly. When the cup starts running empty, we can see behaviours like barking, over-reacting, shutting down, restlessness, resource guarding, or struggling to settle.

Sometimes we focus so heavily on “fixing” behaviours that we forget to ask:
✨ Is this dog getting enough opportunities to be a dog?
✨ Do they feel safe and understood?
✨ Are they getting enough enrichment, choice, rest, connection, and predictability?

Things that help fill a dog’s cup can include:
🐾 Sniffing, chewing, digging, playing, exploring
🐾 Calm social connection with humans and/or other dogs
🐾 Choice and control in their environment
🐾 Predictable routines
🐾 Opportunities to move naturally
🐾 Rest, safety, and good health
🐾 Doing things they genuinely enjoy

Sometimes behaviour change isn’t about more obedience or more exercise — it’s about helping a dog feel safer, calmer, and more fulfilled in everyday life. 💕
