Underdog Training and Behaviour Consulting Underdog Training is a Melbourne based dog training business, developed and run by qualified dog trainers

The services offered by Underdog aim to not just rehabilitate existing dogs, but to prevent problems in dogs through proper socialisation and training- of the owners as well as the dogs! We were the first dog training organisation to offer consultations aimed specifically at preventing problems between dogs and babies and children.

Why This Enrichment Item Was Off Limits- Until now.

This is a Kong wobbler. I’ve used it with lots of dogs and so it made sense to use it (and similar toys) with Neeva.

But I had to put it away and just today when Neeva is about 5 months old I’ve pulled it out again.

Why?

When Neeva was younger she found this kind of enrichment intensely frustrating. She had a low tolerance for frustration and would bark at the item (a lot). She would bark and bounce at it and like a slot machine, it would sometimes spit out food. As soon as I saw this I took it away for two reasons-

I don’t want a toy that reinforces frustration barking.

AND

Enrichment is supposed to be fun, challenging and satisfying- NOT just frustrating.

When I handed it back to her today, now that she has developed a higher frustration tolerance, she played with it like this without a single burst of frustration barking.

So now it can go back into the rotation.

Not every kind of enrichment is suitable for every dog at every time. Think about what your dog gets out of their enrichment- is it what you wanted to achieve?
