Ever wonder how we do X-rays on a snake?
Positioning a snake for an x-ray is the easy part - understanding what you're looking at is where things can get tricky!
If we imagine the snake as a straight line - we measure the body, label by percentage, and use references such as those pictured to determine what organs we are looking at.
These references vary species by species, and our experienced staff always make sure to cross check their estimations.
Pictured are some X-rays we recently did on a python.

Winter Dental Special: Rabbits and Guinea Pigs

We’re passionate about proactive dental care for rabbits and guinea pigs. Regular dental check-ups help us detect early signs of overgrowth, misalignment, or infection before they become serious.

Dental disease is one of the most common—and often overlooked—health issues in rabbits and guinea pigs. Unlike dogs and cats, these exotic pets have teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives. Without proper wear from the right diet or regular dental care, their teeth can become overgrown, leading to pain, difficulty eating, abscesses, and even life-threatening complications.

Due to this, we recommend full skull dental radiographs (x-rays) for every rabbit and guinea pig presenting with dental concerns. These detailed images allow us to see what’s happening below the surface — assessing tooth roots, bone health, and signs of hidden disease that can’t be seen on a simple visual exam.

As part of our current promotion, skull radiographs are reduced from $700 to $500.
If your pet requires a coronal height reduction (filing down overgrown teeth), you may also receive $100–$300 off, depending on the severity and treatment required.

Early intervention and proper imaging are key to preventing long-term pain and complications.

Winter Dental Special: Dogs & Cats

Is your pet’s breath a little on the wild side? This winter, we’re offering up to $350 off dental procedures at The Wild Vet to help freshen things up!

Just like us, our pets can suffer from plaque buildup, gum disease, and dental discomfort — but they’re experts at hiding it. That’s why regular dental care is so important to keep their tails wagging and their kisses sweet! Our experienced vets will start with a FREE dental check, where we’ll assess your pet’s teeth, gums, and overall oral health. If a dental clean is recommended, you’ll receive $100 off your pet’s scale and polish.

At The Wild Vet, we include full-mouth dental radiographs (x-rays) with every dental procedure. These images allow us to assess what’s going on beneath the gum line — where most dental disease hides. Radiographs are essential for accurately identifying infections, bone loss, or damaged roots, helping us decide if extractions are needed and ensuring nothing gets missed.

If multiple extractions are required for your pet due to severe dental disease you may receive up to $350 discounted from your bill.

Anaesthesia in rabbits: understanding the risks, and how we minimise them.

Rabbit anaesthesia carries a slightly higher risk than anaesthesia in dogs and cats, due to rabbits’ unique anatomy, physiology, and sensitivity to stress.

Several factors increase the risk of anaesthesia in rabbits, which is why it is so important to ensure that an experienced rabbit veterinarian oversees the care and treatment of your pet.

At The Wild Vet there are a number of measures taken before, during, and after anaesthesia to give your rabbit the best chance of a succesful procedure and recovery, including Pre-anaesthetic assessments where we recommend blood tests to check organ function, our state of the art monitoring equipment and surgery set-up (pictured) that allows us to closely monitor your rabbit during anaesthesia, pre-measured emergency drugs close at hand, post-operative monitoring and assisted feeding.

For a more detailed look at how we manage each step of your rabbits surgical procedure, head to our website (link in bio) or give our experienced team a call on 1300 WILD VET.

👉Graphic content warning 👈

This brave snake, who is now going by the name Trevor, was found sitting in the middle of the road, injured and alone. A kind-hearted Samaritan brought it to us to be assessed for injuries and sadly, its tail is necrotic and looks that it has been like this for a while and will need to be amputated ASAP.

Despite this painful injury, Trevor is in good spirits and has been the perfect patient 🐍💚

We pride ourselves on being able to offer gold standard care to animals without a home and wildlife who come through the door but we have to ask for your help to continue to be able to do this. Every donation, big or small, helps us cover medical costs and ongoing care for animals just like this one!
