Why is pregnancy testing your cattle so important?
🐮 Tighter calving patterns: identify empty and late calving cows.
🌱 Better Nutrition and grazing management: testing enables better assessment of calving patterns and appropriate feed allocation
📈 Better reproductive monitoring: for identification, control and treatment of reproductive diseases
👶 Improved fertility: retention of fertile cows will ensure that herd genetics are preserved and appropriate animals are culled.
Our veterinarians are also PREGCHECK ™️ certified. This also allows for accurate early detection of pregnancy and efficient decision making for your breeding herd.

🦷 PERIODONTAL DISEASE 🦷
Periodontal disease is one of the greatest challenges in the field of equine dentistry and can affect 70% of horses in their lifetime.
Abnormal occlusion of teeth (commonly cheek teeth) cause feed to pack, generate gaps between teeth (diastemata) and eventually, leads to infection of the structures around the tooth. This is incredibly painful and can result in:
👅 Damage to the cheeks and tongue
🐴 Quidding
💨 Bad breath
⚖️ Weight loss
Though common in older horses, Ponies, Arabs and Quarterhorses are predisposed to developing periodontal disease irrespective of their age.
So what can we do about it?
Once there is damage to the underlying structures of the mouth, it cannot be reversed 😔. So early diagnosis and management is important! With thorough oral exams, our vets can identify abnormal pathology, clean out feed impactions and widen diastema to minimise perpetuating present disease whilst also returning comfort to your horse’s mouth!

The photo may be old but the love of the job is still the same!!
Seasonal conditions has prompted many producers to reduce their numbers in an orderly fashion.
Pregnancy testing can be used in multiple ways from
* off loading empties so your feed is going where it counts
* checking that that the season has not impacted fertility
* tagging pregnant cattle may help achieve a higher sale price at market
* simply knowing what you have going on in the herd to make plans in the future for feed availability and market pricing

April is Heartworm month!
Did you know that traditional worming tablets don’t usually cover for Heartworm?
Heartworm larvae are transmitted by mosquitoes, travel in the blood and settle in the heart. As the worms grow, they stop blood circulation. This can cause lethargy, exercise in tolerance and can become fatal!
Once infected, animals can be difficult to treat.
This is why we use preventatives!
Monthly tablets or yearly injections are both quick and effective and staying on top of these nasty worms.
Unsure what preventative is best for your animal? Give Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic a call today and let us help you keep your pet covered!

Scones before surgery - gotta keep those energy levels up!
What a pleasure to work in such a caring environment (and I’m not just talking about the Scones though note to self - Heather is amazing!).
Steps to the patient friendly gelding:
* c**t haltered and handled
* Dam kept nearby for comfort before and after
* on farm surgical site selected to be clean of obstacles, burs, dust and manure
* help on hand to lift and hold if required
And of course THE SCONES!!! (Always jam first then cream 😉🤤)

🐑 FEELING SHEEPISH? 🐑
Days are getting shorter. It’s time for joining! With harsher conditions this year, what can we do to optimise success this breeding season?
Ram fertility can be compromised by heat, stress and disease.
✔️ Source rams from Brucellosis accredited sites or get them tested.
🌱 Maintain an even plane of nutrition
🧫 Semen testing is encouraged (particularly in older rams) to identify problems prior to joining

But we all know it takes two to Tango! Ewes should:
⚖️ Remain in a body condition score between 2.7-3.3 (out of 5)
🌾 Maintain a rising plane of nutrition for 6 weeks prior to joining

In general, it is encouraged that disease is minimised across breeding stock. This can include:
🩸 Ovine Brucellosis testing
💩 Ovine Johnes screening (in high risk areas)
🪱 Internal and External parasite control
💉 Ensure vaccination status is maintained.
🧃Trace mineral supplementation (Zinc, Selenium, Copper etc.) are an oral supplement or injectable are also encouraged in deficient areas.

Do you want to get your lambing tight, efficient and plentiful? Call the clinic today to see wha we can do to get you sheep-shape 🛥️!

DID YOU KNOW: The phrase ‘long in the tooth’ literally refers to looking in a horse’s mouth? Traditionally, inspecting the length and shape of a horse’s front teeth would give a good indicator of age.
But, with changes in feed types and bit use, the equine mouth can ‘age’ at a quicker rate.
This mouth is a classic example! This horse was supplemented with lots of concentrates which reduces natural wear on the teeth and has caused excessive ‘hooks’ to form. These ‘hooks’ can limit the natural range of motion in the mouth and results in worsening dental disease and painful periodontal disease.
With no history of weight loss or dropping feed, it was a shock to the owner when we ‘lifted the lip’ despite this horse only being 14!
Are you curious to know what lies within your horse’s mouth? Gather some friends and organise an Equine Dental Day OR give us a call to book your horse in for a dental check today!

🐄 PROOF IS IN THE PREGNANCY 🐮
Whether your plan is to use one bull or a team of bulls for joining, it’s vital to know that is getting done. A Bull Test, conducted by one of our veterinarians, is the best way to predict the health and fertility of a bull before joining. Testing includes a general physical exam, reproductive exam and a crush-side semen assessment of your bulls fertility. Testing is a great way to avoid the potential shock of poor pregnancy rates a few months down the track. If your bull is firing blanks,it can be a huge hit to the hip pocket!
