H5 avian influenza (bird flu) has been confirmed in a migratory seabird found on an isolated beach in southern Western Australia. This is the first detection of H5 bird flu in Australia.

There have been no detections in poultry or additional native species.

Australia is well prepared to respond to H5 bird flu.

You can help. If you find multiple sick or dead birds or other animals do not touch them.

Rat and mouse bait poisoning in your pets!

We have recently seen a huge increase in rat and mouse bait poisoning cases here at Chapman Animal Hospital, as have the other clinics in town.

It is incredibly effective at killing rats and mice in your homes however it is also incredibly effective at poisoning your pets, this can happen whether they eat the bait itself or eat a poisoned mouse or rat.

The symptoms of rat bait poison are, these symptoms can take anywhere from 2-5 days after ingestion:

Internal or External Bleeding: Unexplained bleeding from the nose or gums, bloody stool (dark or bright red), blood in the urine, easy bruising, and coughing up blood.
General Malaise: Lethargy, pale gums, weakness, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing.
Neurological Signs: Tremors, seizures, confusion, or sudden paralysis (often caused by bleeding in the brain or spinal cord).
If you suspect or see your pet has eaten a bait or a baited rat or mouse, please get in contact with the clinic on 9964 2828 so we can provide treatment for the ingestion.

Immediate Action Plan

Call the Clinic: Contact Chapman Animal Hospital immediately on (08) 9964 2828.
Bring the Packaging: If you know which bait was used, bring the box or label to the clinic.
Do Not Induce Vomiting: Never force your pet to vomit unless explicitly instructed to do so by a veterinarian.
How to Protect Your Pets Moving Forward

Use Pet-Safe Traps: Switch to snap traps or electronic traps placed in fully enclosed, pet-inaccessible stations.
Block Entry Points: Seal holes in walls, doors, and foundations to keep rodents out naturally.
Remove Attractants: Keep pet food in airtight plastic containers and clear away fallen fruit or birdseed from the yard.
Talk to Neighbors: Ask your neighbors what rodent control methods they use, as poisoned pests can easily wander into your yard.

🌧️Cyclone Update🌧️

Due to DFES now issuing a Watch and Act warning for Geraldton and surrounds due to Tropical Cyclone Narelle, we will be closing the clinic for the remainder of the day. We still aim to open on Monday, pending the impact of the cyclone over the weekend.

Now is the time to bring any animals inside, if they aren't already.

Important Notice: Tropical Cyclone Narelle 🌧️

For the safety of our staff, clients, and patients, our clinic will be closed this weekend due to Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

At this stage, we are planning to reopen Monday morning, however we’ll keep you updated if anything changes. As many Geraldton locals know, power can be unpredictable — while our Generator will be working as hard as the rest of the team, services early next week may be limited. We really appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to care for your pets 💛

🐾 Storm safety tips for your pets:
- Set up a calm, secure indoor space away from windows (quiet room, crate, or covered area)
- Close windows and curtains to reduce noise
- Provide familiar bedding, toys, or clothing for comfort
- Consider calming aids for anxious pets (e.g. thunder shirts, calming pheromones such as Adaptil and Feliway, or Zylkene supplements)
- Chickens & ducks: Bring them into a sheltered indoor space (crate, small pen, even a pop-up tent in the garage!) 🐔
- Other Birds: Aviary and caged birds should be brought indoors to prevent injury or escape

If your pet struggles with severe storm anxiety, please get in touch — our vets can help organise additional support before the weekend.

Bravery award goes to 11 week old Roy!

Roy had a complicated fracture of a growth plate in his foreleg, and after lots of discussion it was decided to amputate in order to avoid long-term complications and get him back to his puppy mischief as soon as possible.
