I think I’ll always have a special place in my heart for blue heelers. 🤍
They were the dogs I grew up with, and they’ve been one of my favourite breeds for as long as I can remember.
If you’ve ever owned a Cattle Dog, you’ll know they’re not just a dog… they’re a whole personality.
They’re ridiculously intelligent, fiercely loyal, incredibly observant and always seem to be one step ahead of you. They notice EVERYTHING, have an opinion on most things and usually like to be involved in whatever their humans are doing.
They were bred right here in Australia to move cattle across huge distances and some pretty unforgiving conditions, so that toughness, determination and endless stamina is quite literally built into them.
And the name “Heeler”? That comes from exactly what you’d expect their tendency to nip at the heels of cattle to keep them moving. That natural herding instinct is still very strong in many Cattle Dogs today… although sometimes the “cattle” they’re trying to organise are other dogs, children or their humans.
They’re a breed that LOVES having a purpose. They’re happiest when their brains and bodies are being challenged, whether that’s working, training, exploring, doing agility, solving enrichment activities or learning something new.
But underneath all of that toughness is an incredibly devoted dog.
They tend to love their people HARD. Many will choose their favourite person and become their permanent little shadow following them everywhere, watching everything they do and making sure absolutely nothing happens without their supervision.
One of my favourite little facts about them is that Cattle Dog puppies are actually born predominantly white, with their beautiful blue or red colouring developing as they grow.
They’re bold.
They’re clever.
They’re stubborn.
They’re athletic.
They’re loyal beyond words.
They can be completely chaotic.
And they definitely know exactly what they want.
When you understand them, they are honestly one of the most incredible breeds.
Maybe I’m biased because they were such a big part of my childhood, but seeing a Cattle Dog will always make me smile.
Some breeds just stay with you forever.
