The emergency management sector is continuing its preparedness activities with statewide briefings and state-level exercising. Incident management personnel are doing all they can to prepare for emerging risks and respond to any emergencies.

The Seasonal Outlook for winter is developed by the Australian and New Zealand Fire and Emergency Services Council (AFAC) and supported by the Bureau of Meteorology, along with state and territory fire and land managers.

It’s important for communities to understand their local risks. Keep up to date with the Fire Danger Ratings on the VicEmergency app and VicEmergency website.

Even in winter, it’s vital for communities to remain vigilant, particularly if burning off. Register your burn-off and monitor weather conditions. Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading and never leave a burn-off unattended.

Working smoke alarms save lives

Many fatal fires start at night and the smell of smoke won’t wake you up.

Is there a working smoke alarm in your bedroom? 🏠🔥

This smoke alarm campaign is run by Victoria’s fire services (CFA and FRV). It is about ensuring that all Victorians are aware of the importance of having working smoke alarms in their home.

Over the last 12 months, CFA responded to 80 chimney fires 🏠🔥

Over time creosote, a highly flammable black tar-like residue, can build up in your chimney.

You can prevent a chimney fire by doing these few simple steps:

- Have your chimney and flues professionally inspected and cleaned annually,

- Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire and keep wood and other combustibles at least one metre from fire,

- Only burn dry, clean wood and extinguish your fire before going to bed or leaving the house.

This Winter prepare your home for fire.

Whether you are a homeowner or renter you should have a home fire escape plan in place.

Plan how you would escape a fire in your home and practice this with your whole family. Make sure you can get out of your home in an emergency.

If a fire starts,

• Get down low and stay out of the smoke.

• If it is safe, close doors to slow down the spread of fire and smoke.

• Alert other people on your way out.

• Get out and stay out.

• Meet at a safe place such as the letterbox out the front of your home.

• Call 000 from a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone. Ask for Fire.

Milder conditions and restrictions coming off can mean it is a good time to burn-off and minimise the fuel on your property, however it is important for Victorians to check that the conditions are suitable for burning off, and to register their burn-off's by calling the Burn Off Notification Line on 1800 668 511 or using https://firepermits.vic.gov.au/

This will stop Brigades from being called out unnecessarily, and save some unneeded stress on property owners too 🔥🏠

Did you know that we lose our sense of smell when we sleep?

This is one of the many reasons why it is so important to have smoke alarms where people sleep.

Keep yourself and your family as safe as possibly by putting smoke alarms in all bedrooms in your home.

With restrictions easing across District, residents are taking the opportunity reduce vegetation waste with a burn-off 🔥

To reduce the number of call outs brigades attend, those undertaking these activities are encouraged to register their burn-off and keep themselves and their properties safe by following some simple steps such as checking weather, having water nearby and putting out the fire properly.

Register your burn here at: https://firepermits.vic.gov.au/notify

For more information go to: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/how-to-prepare-your-property/burning-off

Burning off grass, stubble, weeds, undergrowth or other vegetation is generally permitted outside the Fire Danger Period.

Long weekends are great for seeing friends, going away and having a BBQ 🌭
Every year, CFA firefighters are called to attend fires caused by BBQ’s which are mostly preventable.
While BBQ’s are a fantastic way to gather with friends and family, there are a few things you can do to stay safe.
Before you fire up the BBQ:
- Check the gas supply,
- Check for leaks by spraying soapy water on the connections and hoses - bubbles will appear if there is a leak when you turn on the gas,
- Use in a clear space and ensure there is adequate clearance both around and above the BBQ,
- Only use BBQ's outdoors,
- Remove excess fat from the barbecue after each use to prevent fat fires,
- Make sure it’s not too windy as the burners may blow out, risking a gas leak.
