Cottontail hopped into our Sydney clinic after his owners noticed a swelling on his upper lip. During his examination, we discovered pus coming from the lump, which turned out to be an abscess caused by a tiff with his rabbit friend!

Rabbit pus has a thick, cheese-like consistency, which makes it difficult to drain completely. This is why surgery is often the best option to remove all the infection.

Dr Shelby and Nurse Micaela anaesthetised Cottontail, opened the abscess, removed all the pus, thoroughly flushed the area, and then marsupialised it. Marsupialisation involves placing stitches to hold the abscess open so it can be cleaned and flushed daily. After about a week, the stitches are removed and the site is left to heal naturally.

Weโ€™re happy to report that Cottontail recovered beautifully and is now back to his normal, happy self!

Echo has been a regular visitor to our Adelaide clinic over the past six months, receiving ongoing care for overgrown incisors. Her treatment has included regular incisor trims using a specialised burr, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication when needed, alongside dietary changes to help maintain her weight and keep her comfortable.

Despite these efforts, her monthly check-ups revealed that her incisors continued to overgrow, and a malocclusion (misalignment) of her mouth was becoming more pronounced. To better understand the problem, a CT scan was performed.

The CT results revealed bilateral otitis media (middle ear infections in both ears) and signs of chronic respiratory infection. Unfortunately, due to factors such as motion and the small size of the structures, the CT didn't give us the full picture of her dental condition.

At Echo's most recent visit, we performed head and dental X-rays to further evaluate the growth of the tooth roots and determine whether incisor removal might be appropriate. Fortunately, Echo's teeth were only mildly affected. This means that any tooth extraction attempt would almost certainly result in a jaw fracture, a significant risk.

With this in mind, we elected to continue with conservative management, including sending samples for bacterial culture and sensitivity testing. Echo's incisors were trimmed during the procedure, and she was sent home with a longer course of antibiotics and pain relief.

Echo recovered well from her procedure and was nibbling on some NeoCare shortly afterwards. We'll continue to see her for regular check-ups and dental management to ensure she stays happy and comfortable.

Meet Princess, a beautiful 11-year-old Sun Conure who recently visited our Jindalee team after her devoted owners noticed she was severely feather plucking, leaving behind more than just missing feathers. There was also visible blood, so they were understandably concerned.

During her examination, Dr Stefanie discovered that Princess had unfortunately developed a full-thickness wound across her ventral neck and crop region due to self-mutilation. Thankfully, there were no other significant findings, and her dedicated owners were ready to act fast.

Princess was given pain relief and supportive care before undergoing urgent surgery. Dr Stefanie delicately debrided the wound, carefully removing any non-viable tissue and flushing the area to reduce infection risk. With meticulous precision, she then closed the wound in a way that would support healing while allowing for the future movement of Princessโ€™s crop.

Now for the glamorous part... Princess was fitted with her newest accessory, a soft collar! This stylish piece not only made her look extra regal but also protected her surgical site during recovery. Her loving owner took her home the next day, armed with medication and care instructions to support her healing journey.

Princess returned weekly for post-op checks, where she enjoyed supervised cone-free time to preen and stretch. With time, love, and close monitoring at home, her feathers began to regrow beautifully, and weโ€™re thrilled to say sheโ€™s now officially cone-free and flaunting her fresh, vibrant plumage once again!

Gary the cockatiel was brought to Dr Kiara at our Peninsula clinic after her owner noticed she was quieter than usual and passing loose droppings. On physical examination, Gary was found to have a significantly distended and firm coelom (abdominal cavity), was underweight, and appeared quite unwell.

An ultrasound was performed, which confirmed that Gary had an impaction within her oviduct. While Gary had previously laid eggs, she hadn't done so in some time, suggesting that the infection and impaction had likely been developing over several months.

Gary was hospitalised overnight for fluid therapy, pain relief and assisted feeding to stabilise her prior to surgery. A blood panel was also performed to ensure she was strong enough for surgery, and thankfully, her results were within normal limits.

Dr Kiara performed surgery to remove the infected material from Gary's oviduct. Large amounts of infected, adhered egg material were carefully dissected away. Once the oviduct was cleared, Dr Kiara evaluated the rest of the coelomic cavity to determine whether a full salpingohysterectomy (removal of the oviduct) was appropriate. However, an abnormality was noted in Gary's left kidney, so the team elected not to proceed with full removal to minimise anaesthetic time and risk.

The oviduct and coelomic wall were carefully closed, and Gary made a smooth, quick recovery from anaesthesia.

Once she has had more time to recover from this serious infection, Gary will undergo further testing to assess her kidneys. But for now, we're thrilled to report that she's doing well, and already back to her cheeky, charming self!

Recently, our Murdoch team had the pleasure of treating Limpet, a 2-year-old Australorp chicken who presented with a very pendulous crop, intermittent regurgitation, and poor body condition.

During her physical examination, Dr Holly palpated a firm, spherical mass in Limpetโ€™s crop. It was suspected to be a foreign body, preventing her from properly digesting food and maintaining a healthy weight. She was also noticeably dehydrated.

To stabilise her before surgery, Limpet was admitted for intravenous fluids to correct the dehydration. Blood tests were performed to assess her blood cell counts and organ function, which were, fortunately, all normal. Once rehydrated and cleared for surgery, Dr Holly proceeded with the operation.

With the assistance of Nurse Angela, Limpet was anaesthetised and prepared for surgery. Dr Holly made an incision over the crop and immediately uncovered a large, firm, compacted mass, roughly the size of a grapefruit! The foreign material was a dense mixture of long grass, food, and old, calcified debris. Thankfully, it popped out easily with gentle manipulation. Dr Holly carefully examined as much of the upper gastrointestinal tract as possible and, fortunately, identified no further issues. The crop was then surgically repaired.

After her anaesthetic recovery, Limpet enjoyed a small, soft meal to avoid straining the crop. Her dedicated owners have since removed all long grass from her environment to help prevent future crop impactions.

Weโ€™re happy to report that Limpet has gained weight, her previously stretched crop is slowly returning to a more normal shape, and sheโ€™s happily back to her usual antics with the rest of the flock!

Say hello to Nimmel, a sweet and spirited little lovebird who recently visited Dr Mark at our Gold Coast Clinic with a stubborn and sadly chronic sinus issue.

Nimmelโ€™s attentive owner brought him in after noticing several concerning signs: persistent nasal discharge, noisy breathing, and a distinct tail bob. These were all indicators that Nimmel was working harder than he should to breathe.

Unfortunately, poor Nimmel has been battling breathing problems since before he was adopted by his current owner. Surrendered due to his long-standing health concerns, Nimmel has now found a new family committed to giving him the second chance he so deserves.

Dr Mark reviewed Nimmelโ€™s medical history and previous diagnosis of permanent scarring to the trachea and syrinx (voicebox), likely caused by past infections or prolonged inflammation. This scarring may explain his raspy breathing and uniquely hoarse chirps.

Nimmel had recently been treated with an inhaled antibiotic that initially helped improve his symptoms. However, when the treatment stopped, his respiratory signs quickly returned. To get a clearer picture of what was driving this ongoing issue, we performed a thorough round of diagnostics, including blood tests and a bacterial culture obtained from Nimmel's sinus.

The sinus culture grew Enterobacter, an organism not commonly found in healthy bird respiratory tracts. We suspect this has been playing a significant role in Nimmelโ€™s chronic illness. However, due to his previous long-term use of antibiotics, we must now carefully consider medication options to avoid antibiotic resistance.

To support his recovery, Dr Mark taught Nimmelโ€™s mum how to perform gentle sinus flushes at home, a safe, hands-on method to help clear mucus, reduce inflammation, and manage bacterial load. When performed correctly, this simple technique can significantly improve comfort and quality of life in birds with chronic upper respiratory issues.

Despite his sniffles, Nimmel continues to charm everyone he meets. With his gentle cuddles, curious chirps, and resilient little heart, heโ€™s already won the affection of our entire team.

Nimmelโ€™s case is a reminder that chronic conditions require ongoing care, patience, and a whole lot of love, and heโ€™s lucky to have all three.

Baby Kylo came into our Osborne Park clinic to see Dr Wendy after his vigilant owner noticed that his right eye was sore. Poor Kylo was squinting, his eye was abnormally red, and there was some discharge on the fur surrounding it.

While closely inspecting Kylo's eye, Dr Wendy spotted something unusual tucked into the corner of the ocular tissues. After applying local anaesthetic drops for comfort, Dr Wendy carefully used forceps to remove the culprit, a sneaky grass seed, likely from his hay!

Dr Wendy then completed a careful examination of Kylo and used a diagnostic dye called fluorescein to assess his eye further. Fluorescein highlights any damage to the surface of the eye by glowing green under a special light. Sure enough, the test revealed a sizeable corneal ulcer, caused by the grass seed rubbing on Kylo's delicate cornea.

With the foreign material safely removed, Kylo was sent home with anti-inflammatory medication and eye drops to help soothe his eye and support healing.

We are pleased to report that despite the eye irritation, Kylo was still his usual bright and bouncy self, full of energy and charm, and has now made a complete recovery from his painful ordeal.

Casper, a charming and much-loved guinea pig, was brought to our Canberra clinic after his vigilant owners noticed progressive swelling on his cheek. During his consultation, Dr Daniella identified the swelling as an abscess, likely secondary to dental disease, after noting uneven incisor wear and overgrown mandibular teeth.

Radiographs were taken to assess Casper's dental structures and the extent of the infection. These images confirmed that the abscess was likely linked to an infected mandibular tooth and helped rule out additional areas of concern.

Casper was prepared for surgery, where Dr Daniella incised the abscess and drained a significant amount of pus. On closer inspection, the infection was traced to Casper's last mandibular tooth, which had eroded into the surrounding bone. All necrotic tissue and bone fragments were meticulously debrided, and the area was thoroughly flushed. To support ongoing drainage and healing, the abscess cavity was sutured open to allow for continued cleaning and close monitoring.

Before concluding the procedure, a dental float was performed to shorten and reshape Casper's overgrown teeth. This adjustment was made to improve his ability to eat comfortably and prevent further dental complications.

Tissue samples were collected and submitted for bacterial culture and sensitivity testing to guide targeted antimicrobial therapy. Casper's dedicated owners have continued to bring him in for regular rechecks. At his most recent review, the surgical site was healing well, with healthy wound contraction observed. Casper is expected to make a great recovery with continued care.

Meet Hazel, a sweet 3-year-old female guinea pig who recently visited Dr Sasha at our Sunshine Coast clinic after her observant owners noticed a lump near her mammary gland.

During her consultation, Dr Sasha performed a thorough health check and focused on the area of concern. A fine needle aspirate (FNA) was taken from the lump, which drew out around 3mL of dark red, non-clotting fluid, a potentially concerning finding.

Under the microscope, Dr Sasha examined the fluid and noted some abnormal epithelial cells. While not definitive, these results raised suspicion of cancer.

Hazel's owners made the brave and proactive decision to go ahead with surgery, not wanting to take any chances. Dr Sasha performed a procedure to remove the entire right mammary gland, including the ni**le.

We're happy to report that Hazel handled the procedure beautifully, woke up without any issues, and tucked into her food straight awayโ€”what a little champ!

The removed mass was sent for histopathology and confirmed to be mammary ductal carcinoma, a type of cancer. Fortunately, the results indicated that the tumour was completely excised - excellent news!

We're so proud of Hazel and her amazing family for acting quickly and making her health a priority. Early intervention like this can make all the difference when it comes to lumps and bumps in guinea pigs.
