Some like it hot!
This is Razzle my Spiny-tailed Monitor enjoying a bask under her heat lamp. She was surrendered to me a few years ago with a condition called follicular stasis. I performed surgery to remove her ovaries and has come on leaps and bounds since then. I have a few sheets of paperbark in her tank and she loves getting up on top of them for a bask or slipping in between to hide out for the day. She is one of my favourite lizards in my collection.

Just upgraded my lighting and heating in my big snake enclosures at home. I’m using Arcadia 150W heat globes and the new ProT5 lighting kits (6%) in these enclosures. I’ve also incorporated a bit of tech with them link to my Google Home to be able to turn them on and off!

One of the advantages of being a reptile and amphibian veterinarian is that I get to see some pretty amazing animals. It is really cool when we get in species that we don't see that often... such as this little dude!
Peron's Tree Frogs (Litoria peronii) are a striking frog species that are found throughout New South Wales, into southern Queensland and also the northern half of Victoria.
They have small green spots over the body and a stunning flash of yellow and black down their legs.
Their distinguishing feature is the cross-shape marking to the iris of the eye.
I was able to get some good photos of this one. Enjoy!

If you are into turtles and looking for something to do this Saturday then there are still a couple of places left for Reptiles Victoria's Turtle Workshop.
I'll be presenting 3 lectures:
1. Sticking Your Neck Out... The Eastern Long Neck Turtle. We will go through the ecology and biology of the most common turtle species that comes into care in Melbourne.
2. Turtle Troubles... Common Turtle Conditions. Learn about the common medical and surgical conditions we see in turtles and get an insight into how these are treated.
3. Filling In The Cracks...Shell Fractures in Turtles. This is one of my most popular presentations and I've made a number of updates! We will go through how I tackle shell fracture repairs.
In addition, we will have a number of different turtle species available to demonstrate handling, identification and assessment.
I will also be doing at least one necropsy/post-mortem examination to show everyone what turtles look like on the inside!

Congenital abnormalities or birth defects are something that does occasionally occur in reptiles. One the most severe examples of this is are co-joined twins.
Last week we had this little Blue-Tongue Lizard come in. Unfortunately we had to euthanase him but we took the opportunity to do a necropsy and have a look at exactly what was going on.
It appeared the right head was not particularly functional and we found some interesting anatomy.

I've posted cases about blocked femoral pores in Bearded Dragons a couple of times on my page over the years. Here is one of the worst cases we have seen being operated on at our new Unusual Pet Vets clinic. Dr James beat me to the surgery... though I have to admit he did a really good job so I'll give him this one! Plus he likes the camera more than I do!
In most cases of blocked femoral pores, we can express the material out. In Bubble's case, there was simply too much and it was completely trapped under the skin. The surgery involved actually cutting out and removing the strip of skin and glands along the underside of both back legs.
