🐶 FOUND A STRAY DOG IN NSW?
Here’s what to do to keep them safe ❤️(Companion Animals Act 1998 NSW)
1. If the dog is injured or unwell -
Take them straight to your nearest VET or RSPCA NSW.
They’ll provide immediate care and scan for a microchip.
You won’t be charged for handing in a stray (Section 64).
2. If the dog is healthy and friendly -
Your LOCAL COUNCIL is legally responsible for stray dogs in NSW (Section 64).
Contact your council ranger service so they can collect the dog and start the reunification process.
3. If it’s after hours or you can’t reach council -
A vet can safely take the dog (Section 8).
Vets are authorised to:
- Scan for a microchip
- Contact the owner
- Keep the dog secure overnight
- Notify council when they reopen
This is often the safest and least stressful option for the dog.
4. If you can safely contain the dog -
Keep them in a secure yard or enclosed space while you wait for help.
If the dog is frightened or reactive, don’t try to handle them - call council for assistance.
💛 Why this matters!
Getting a stray dog to the right place quickly helps them get home faster and keeps them safe from traffic, injury, and stress.
Thank you for caring for animals in our community.🙏
