Everyone thinks a dog that follows you everywhere is adorable. Sweet, even.
But here's the truth: a dog that can't leave your side isn't devoted — they're anxious.
"Velcro dogs" aren't bonded to you out of love. They're terrified of what happens when you disappear. That constant shadowing, the panting when you close a bathroom door, the destruction when you leave — that's stress, not affection.
It happens when dogs haven't been taught to self-regulate. When departures become emotional. When calm, confident independence has never been modelled or rewarded.
The fix isn't more cuddles. It's building a dog that trusts you're coming back — through structure, calm leadership, and gradually teaching them that alone time is safe.
Your dog doesn't need you to be their everything. They need you to be their leader.
