Snickerdoodle (F1 Valais) is due to lamb in around six weeks. Today she’s been enjoying a break in the rain and feasting on grass 🌧️🌱

Oh hey!
It’s the last day for apple picking at so I’m finally bringing Biscuit and Humbug down for some cuddles.
We’re expecting some drizzle and patchy sunshine so bring your boots and a raincoat to experience some classic but oh so pretty Adelaide Hills weather amongst the apple trees 💕🍎

Recently I saw a very interesting case - meet a very pretty little F2 ewe, who also happened to have te**es!

This ewe presented female at birth, however as she approached 1 year of age her owner noticed that she appeared to have testicles under the skin in the area where a ram would have a sc***um. In addition to this, the ewe had an enlarged cl****is and was progressively showing more ram-like behaviour, including head butting and showing a lot of interest in ewes on heat.

While freemartin sheep can occur (infertile females sometimes with male like characteristics due to shared blood supply with brothers in utero), this girly was a singleton lamb. Hence she is probably a variation of the classic s*x chromosomes - possibly XXY or another combination.

As she is not appropriate for breeding, she is going to be a pet, but no one wants a pet ram! Here’s where I came in - as registered veterinarian I was able to surgically castrate our little lady and thus remove that pesky source of testosterone.
Please note that this is an invasive procedure, and our girly was well sedated with ketamine and other goodies to keep her pain free during and after her procedure.

Thank you to the lovely vet students who nerded out with me and took photos to document this interesting case!

Sugar went for a ride for artificial insemination (AI) today as part of her embryo program. If we have any success and are able to sell some of her progeny, maybe we can invest in our own trailer 😉

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers.
By far the most special part of living with our sheepies are the bonds between mothers and their lambs.

Whether biological mum or birth mother, we are so thankful for our ladies (even if the Border Leicesters do my head in sometimes 😂)
