Please remember to keep chocolate out of reach of our four legged friends this Easter long weekend.

Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats because it contains theobromine and caffeine, which they cannot metabolize effectively.

Signs and Symptoms to watch out for:
- Anxious or agitated behaviour
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Increased body temperature
- Muscle rigidity
- Rapid breathing or panting
- Increased heart rate
- Low blood pressure
- Seizures
- Advanced signs (cardiac failure, weakness, and coma)

Hot cross buns, especially those containing raisins or sultanas, are toxic to dogs and potentially cats and can cause kidney failure, so it's highly important to keep them out of reach of our pets, especially during Easter.

Signs and Symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal Pain.

If you notice these symptoms and suspect your pet maybe have ingested some chocolate or hot cross buns, please call our vet on (02) 6851 1100.

When was the last time you trimmed your dog's nails?

Nail trimming might not be your dog's favourite activity, but it is crucial for their health.
Long nails can lead to pain/discomfort and aggravate issues like arthritis.

So why should you trim your dog's nails?
- To avoid pain and discomfort to your pet's paws and joints,
- Prevent nails from snagging and causing injury,
- Prevents nails from growing into their paw pads.

We should be trimming our dog's nails every 3-4 weeks or as needed to keep them in top shape.

Tips for a stress free nail trim:
- Use the right tools for the job, use sharp, clean clippers, guillotine trimmers or grinders.
- create a routine to help your dog understand the practise and help them get used to the sensation. Daily paw rubs can get them become desensitised to their paws being handled.

Lastly.... avoid cutting their nails to short! Nails are made up of sensitive tissue and when cut too short can be quite painful.

If your dog becomes stressed or a bit hard to handle when nail trimming, give us a call on (02)6851 1100 (Forbes) or 0474 511 100 (Grenfell) to make an appointment, and we will be able to trim your dogs nails for you.

With Easter being just under a month away, are you and your pet ready?

Here are a couple of this to consider in the next few weeks:

Medication – Will you have enough medication for your pet over the Easter period? If you are running short, give the clinic a call the week before Easter to ensure we can order any medication prior to Easter.
- The Clinic will be closed from Friday 18th till Monday 21st. We will reopen as normal on Tuesday 22nd April.

Boarding Kennels – It is important ensure your pets are up to date with their vaccination before staying at any boarding facility. Dogs require a Kennel Cough vaccination (C5) as well as their Parvovirus, Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis and Canine Parainfluenza vaccination (C4). These vaccinations well need to be done at least 2 weeks prior, so your pets reach full immunity before staying at a boarding kennel.

Ticks - If you are heading to the coast to visit family over the Easter period and your pet is traveling with you, ensure you have provided protection for your pet against ticks!

Chocolate – And remember to keep all those yummy chocolate Easter goodies out of reach from our 4-legged friends!!
Keep an eye out for signs of toxicity – vomiting, diarrhoea, increased body temperature, anxious or agitated behaviour, rapid breathing and seizures.

We will have a vet on call if you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate.
Call our clinic on (02) 6851 1100 to book an appointment or for an emergency.
