NEW INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION NIGHT

TUESDAY 7th JUNE
7.30pm at the clubhouse

Please contact the Supervisor of training (John) by email at [email protected] if you are coming so we can arrange catering.

All KODC member’s welcome!
You must wear your membership badge and be a member of the club.

This will be a great opportunity for you to learn what is required to become an instructor at the club and what pleasures it can bring.

Topics covered on the night will include:
Structure of the training course
Positive Reinforcement techniques
Dealing with handlers
Planning your lessons
Basic dog behavioural issues
Equipment (What we use, how to use it)

Training Course Overview
As part of the training course, you will be asked to spend at least one month in each class level (Baby Puppies, Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 and Class 4), the first couple of classes observing, and then assisting the instructor in teaching the exercises, and expanding to running the classes under supervision.

Theory Lectures
The course also includes the following COMPULSORY lectures:
Session 1: Baby Puppy 1
Session 2: Baby Puppy 2
Session 3: Baby Puppy 3
Session 4: Baby Puppy 4
Session 5: Beginners
Session 6: Class 1
Session 7: Class 2
Session 8: Class 3
Session 9: Class 4
Session 10: Revision and Questions

These lectures consist of a talk, by a nominated class instructor and/or Supervisor of Training, outlining what is taught at each level, followed by question time. The time taken to complete each session will depend on the length of the session and the time available. Some sessions are more complex and will naturally take longer to teach and learn.
The course takes between 6 to 12 months to complete (depending on your availability).
The course is only applicable to Obedience instructing, up to Class 4 level, further training is required to instruct in Obedience Ring Work, Rally or Agility.

On completion of the course, Trainees are tested by the Supervisor of Training and at least one other instructor.

The test consists of your knowledge of the Club rules, followed by practical sessions instructing in Baby Puppy and Class 2 to demonstrate your ability to teach to the required standard.

Once you have passed your instructors test, you will be able to select which classes you would like to teach.

If you are interested in attending this information session, please see the Supervisor of Training (John), so as the event can be appropriately catered for.

COVID UPDATE
When and how our club will be able to reopen is still a little unclear, but Victoria's "80% of 16+yrs fully vaccinated" threshold is a key date. It seems that will happen during the first week of November. So there's a good chance we can start classes again on Sunday 7th November. No promises, just an estimate!

There is much to do in the meantime to get our COVID Plan modified and approved, and that's a bit hard when we don't yet know all the details of what the government's rules are going to be.

However one important aspect seems clear. Our club is affiliated with Dogs Victoria (the Victorian Canine Association) and they have decreed that (in line with the Government's regulations) almost everyone attending our classes must be fully vaccinated (ie 2 jabs).
It is "almost everyone" because we can have a maximum of 5 people with "unknown vaccination or unvaccinated status". It's difficult to see how that 5 limit could be managed in our situation given the large number of people we will have attending classes. So it may mean that, for at least the remainder of 2021, all people attending class must provide evidence they are fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption. I stress this hasn't been decided yet, but I thought it fair to give an early indication of the possibility. It's another reason to get vaccinated now.

The pandemic is not going to magically go away when we open up, and our club has a responsibility to not only comply with whatever regulations are imposed on us, but we need to also provide as safe as possible an environment for our members.

There will be further announcements when the situation becomes clearer.
