How many people can say they get to work alongside their dog while the sun rises over Sydney Harbour?

And with a bloody pointer 😆

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and sent through potential detection dog prospects it’s genuinely appreciated, especially after being a bit quiet on social media for a while.

Some of the messages have been incredibly detailed, and I really appreciate the time and effort behind that. Coming from a training background myself, I know how much work goes into developing a dog whether that’s raising a young prospect or putting time into a rescue to give them a better chance.

Because of that, I want to take my time and go through everything properly.

I’m currently quite busy with work on the ground, but I’ll be taking time this week to review everything.

If a dog isn’t the right fit for this project, I’ll do my best to connect the right people where possible.

We’re potentially on the lookout.

At K9 Bellator, we may be sourcing a dog with the right potential to develop into a detection dog.

For this particular project, we’re currently interested in dogs aged between 6 months and 2 years old.

We’re not looking for extremes.
The right dog for this work is steady, clear-headed, and able to function in real environments.

What matters:

• Willingness to search and engage
• Food or toy motivation
• Environmentally stable and able to settle
• Social and safe around people including small children
• Able to recover and keep working
• Not easily pulled off task by distractions (including small animals)

We are not specifically looking for high-drive, frantic dogs or very head-strong hunting types.

Calm, thoughtful dogs that can work methodically tend to be more suitable.

Breed matters less than the individual dog but we do take genetics in consideration.

If you think you may have something suitable, feel free to reach out.

We are incredibly grateful for all the work we had over the last year, and for the jobs still to come.

Being a good trainer and handler will always be a big part of what we do. But these days, it’s just as important (or even more so) to be an even better operator in the environments we work in.

The standard of our dogs and the work they do will always matter. Alongside that, we’re putting more time into how we operate on site, compliance, and making sure our handlers are well prepared to work smoothly within the security and safety industry.

That also means not everything can, or should, be shared on social media.

But we are still here and working with a team in the background that helps us bringing our goals into reality.

Thank you to everyone who continues to trust us and work alongside us we genuinely appreciate it.

And I couldn’t be more proud of how all the dogs have showed up and keep showing up. Two of the OG’s are turning 9 this year. We also have a new generation of dogs stepping up. It is sad but also bitter sweet.

All through November, we’re running two scent evenings each week one for the operational dogs and dogs in the sport, and one for those just getting started.

TUESDAY – Scent Development Evening
For dogs already imprinted on at least one target odour.

We’ll be working through more complex search patterns, problem-solving, and adding additional target odours where appropriate.
➡️ Handlers who’d like to work on specific training goals can message directly to secure a spot.

THURSDAY – Beginner Detection Evening
For dogs (and handlers!) who are keen to start out in detection or nose work.
We’ll start with odour introduction, simple searches, and how to build your dog’s confidence and focus through play and reward.

💰 $60 per evening
📍 Every Tuesday and Thursday through November

This year was a bit different we went from K9 Bellator International Pty Ltd to Just K9 Bellator Pty Ltd. The business did not change much in a way. We still relentlessly pored our passion into the detection work and dogs.

Running a business and your passion together can be a big challenge. The thing that did show me in the past year was more determination to the work I love so much.

I can train my dogs to a standard I want, I am able to take them out to real operational jobs, I am able to make mistakes, fail, learn and adjust, train again and put it into practice again.

K9 Bellator is meant to be professional and not for personal stories, it stands for quality and professionalism, being humble and showing up reliably.

Sharing knowledge and helping others but also being a reliable service with dogs that love their job, with the same passion I have for doing detection work.

Operational dogs aren’t made in normal environments. They’re made in the real ones.

With young detection dogs, it’s not just about odour. It’s about resilience. From car rides to city streets, to the chaos of cranes, construction, and crowds every experience matters.

Even just watching the older dogs, Mies has already seen and done a lot at not even 7 months old. Her genetics are strong, but that doesn’t mean the job is done. As trainers, we still have to do our part. Exposure, travel, different setups all of it helps her learn that the world isn’t something to fear, it’s something to work in.

Because let’s be honest the environments these dogs end up in operationally are far from “normal.” We ask them to walk into places no pet dog would ever have to navigate, on top of that perform a task that is very important.

Taking the time to show them how that looks, piece by piece, builds their confidence. Over time, those spaces don’t feel foreign they become their stomping ground. Their mindset becomes strong.

Mies is already living it. Last weekend she flew to Adelaide for a workshop, this week she’s in Sydney tagging along with the aunties for work experience. She’s the 7-month-old intern who thinks she’s running the show. 😆

Why You Should Never Get a Pointer for Detection

Because they’ll take over your whole life. At work, they’ll drag you through searches, call you out on every mistake, and make sure you know who’s really running the show. At home, they’ll worm their way under blankets, win over your kids, and somehow become more important to your family than you are. They’ll drive you mad, wear you out, and make you question your own handling skills on a daily basis.

And yet, you’ll still find yourself wondering how you ever managed detection without one.

A focused two days of detection training aimed at strengthening odour recognition testing, improving consistency, and collecting meaningful performance data across known target odours.

Delivered in a controlled environment, these training days provide the structure and support to run high volumes of clean, focused repetitions.

Training includes blank runs, distractors (interferents), and blind/double-blind setups, following best-practice protocols aligned with CPNI detection dog guidance.

We’ll also apply the data collection system developed by Simon Prins used with his full permission to document every repetition in a consistent, structured format.

Learning this system was a turning point for me; it showed that proper data collection is more than a training diary it’s a tool to recognise performance patterns, identify weaknesses, and back up your dog’s capability with evidence.

Each dog’s repetitions are documented across the two days to support training plan development, track odour generalisation, and provide a clear record of performance for future review.
