Mick and Mel secure another Australian Championships title! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿพ After winning Australian Dog of the Year at the Commonwealth Championships, the pair carried that momentum into Koroit, going on to claim the Australian Championships title against the countryโ€™s best.

Mick and Mel went back-to-back with outstanding scores of 89, 91, and 92 serious numbers at this level. Three strong, consistent performances when it mattered most.

Those performances secured the Australian Championship Open title and some of the sportโ€™s most respected trophies ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ† Ross Dodge Memorial Trophy โ€“ Australian Championship Open
Ross Dodge was a highly respected trialler, mentor, and passionate competitor who loved competing in the major sheepdog trials across Australia. In honour of Ross and his contribution to the sport, the Dodge family established the Ross Dodge Memorial Trophy as the perpetual award for the winner of the Australian Sheepdog Championships Open.

the Dodge family also generously provide a trophy for the winner to keep each year in remembrance of Ross and his legacy within the sheepdog trialling community. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ† Don Smith Memorial Trophy โ€“ Australian Championship Open

The Don Smith Memorial Trophy honours the memory of Don Smith, a passionate supporter of sheepdog trialling. Although Don came to the sport later in life, he quickly developed a deep love for it and became well known within the trialling community. He shared a close friendship with fellow trialler Barry Paton, and before his passing, Don expressed a wish to contribute something meaningful to the Australian Championships.

Don had previously served during the war as a photographer and famously survived having to bail out, saved by his parachute. Wanting to leave a lasting contribution to the sport he admired, Donโ€™s legacy was honoured when Barry helped establish a perpetual trophy in his name.

๐Ÿ† Australian Championship Perpetual Trophy โ€“ Open Trial Winner
The Australian Championship Perpetual Trophy is one of the most prestigious awards presented at the Australian Sheepdog Championships, awarded to the winner of the Open Trial.
As a perpetual trophy, the winnerโ€™s name is engraved each year, creating an ongoing record of the top handler and dog teams in the sport and preserving the history of the championships.

A brilliant run of form and a result that speaks for itself. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ•

Mick has had an incredible two weeks away competing at the Commonwealth Championships in Port Fairy and the Australian Championships in Koroit! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Mick and his dog MGH Rabbit gained automatic entry into the Commonwealth Championships Australian Dog of the Year after Rabbit was crowned the 2025 NSW Dog of the Year. What an achievement! ๐Ÿ†

This event was especially exciting, as Rabbit had previously won the last two Australian Dog of the Year titles. Unfortunately, she injured herself in a farm accident just prior to the competition and was unable to compete.

With Rabbit sidelined, Echo Park Mel the next NSW dog in line stepped up, and what a decision that turned out to be!

Mel delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a massive 97 in the first round and backing it up with a strong 90 in the final to take out Australian Dog of the Year! ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿ†

This marks the fourth time Mick and his dogs have won this prestigious competition. A huge thank you to Hypro Group for their continued support. All of the team are fuelled on Hypro Premium Grain Free Active Adult, helping keep them strong, healthy and in top condition all year round.

An amazing effort from Mick and his team we couldnโ€™t be prouder! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ•

Tune in next Sunday on ABC or any time on ABC iView to see whether I also get distracted by sheep poo during my trainer's assessment
