This evening we said goodbye to Smiggle.

Honestly, I’m tired. 😔

Smiggle was surrendered into our care on 16th July 2023 at the age of four. She was now about seven and a half years of age.

She was never really “ours” so to speak. She came into our care because her family loved her enough to make an incredibly difficult decision when her medical needs became too much for them to manage.

I always tell myself not to get too attached to the permanent medical residents. I try to keep a little distance.

But who am I kidding?

Smiggle surprised us time and time again. Every time we thought she was running out of chances, she found another one. She fought through multiple dental surgeries, infections, medications and setbacks, and somehow always came back asking for more hay.

I hoped she’d surprise us one more time.

This evening, when it became clear that her little body was tired, Dr CJ - who is not only a fabulous vet but also a dear friend - guided me on what to give Smiggle to help her rest comfortably and peacefully.

I know we have several older permanent medical residents whose time with us is becoming limited, and lately the goodbyes seem to be coming more often.

At the same time, we’ve welcomed several younger permanent medical residents into the Lair. Smiggle’s story is a reminder of why we keep saying yes to them. Sometimes a guinea pig we think we may only have for a short while goes on to surprise us for years.

Thank you to her previous family for trusting us with her care.

Thank you to Helene, who faithfully sponsored Smiggle and helped make her ongoing treatment possible.

And thank you to everyone who followed her journey.

Goodnight, Smiggle.

Sometimes the bravest little guinea pigs leave the biggest holes. 😭💔

Chandler is such a friend to those who are unwell. 💚

He’s always had his brother Joey, but he also shared a special bond with Prince, who sadly passed away from bladder cancer.

As mentioned yesterday, poor Finn (right) has now been diagnosed with lymphoma. Chandler refuses to let him go through this alone.

Whether it’s sitting beside him, sharing a hay pile, or simply being there, Chandler has taken Finn under his wing.

The heart of this little pig is second to none. 🥹💚

Guess How Many Babies Elizabeth Is Carrying!

Elizabeth came to us as part of the recent intake of 61 guinea pigs, and before long we’ll be welcoming her little ones into the world. 🥰

I think I know the answer… but that’s not fair because I’ve been able to feel her tummy. 🤭

How many babies do you think Elizabeth is carrying?

⬇️ Leave your guess in the comments!

A huge thank you to Karen for kindly sponsoring and naming this beautiful girl. 💚

Mr Runt and Warrior, two of our recent surrenders, also visited the vet this week.

Both are showing signs of neurological issues, and at this stage there is concern these may be congenital in nature.

We know that their father managed to gain access to their mother through a C&C enclosure, both being closely related. Unfortunately, when close relatives are bred together, the risk of inherited defects and developmental abnormalities increases significantly.

Mr Runt also occasionally makes a loud grinding sound. We paid particular attention to his teeth during the examination, but thankfully they are currently in good condition. For now, there is no obvious dental cause for the noise, though we’ll continue to monitor him closely.

At this stage, we’ve been advised to monitor both guinea pigs over the next month before making any decisions about their long-term care. Some conditions can become clearer as they mature and settle.

If their neurological issues prove to be ongoing, they will likely become permanent medical residents here at the Lair. In that case, we may look at having Mr Runt desexed so he can safely live with Warrior long-term.

For now, they’re comfortable, happy, and receiving all the care they need while we learn more about what the future holds for them. 💚

Last night Daisy welcomed four babies into the world from our intake of 61 guinea pigs.

Sadly, one baby was stillborn, but three little ones are here and doing well. 💚

I’ll admit I’m kicking myself a little for not being there, but I can’t be awake 24/7, and thankfully Daisy knew exactly what to do without me.

Daisy gave birth to one little boy and two little girls, all of whom are feeding well and staying close to Mum. 🥰

Given the conditions these guinea pigs came from, there is always some concern about congenital issues. Many of the guinea pigs from this intake have come from generations of uncontrolled breeding, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on Daisy’s babies as they grow.

Seeing the congenital issues and stillbirths we’ve already encountered from this intake does make me wonder how many babies never made it before these guinea pigs came into care.

For now, though, we’re simply grateful to see three little lives safely here, warm, fed and loved.

A huge thank you to Adelaide for sponsoring and naming Daisy. 💚

Gentle Reminder…

We are currently at capacity and unable to accept new surrender requests, except for guinea pigs previously adopted from us and urgent medical welfare cases.

We’re finding that many surrender requests are for guinea pigs originally obtained from breeders. If this applies to you, please consider reaching out to the breeder or source you obtained your guinea pig from, as they may be able to assist with support or rehoming options.

Thank you for your understanding while we focus our resources on the guinea pigs currently in our care.

Pip came into our care at just four months old and has been stealing hearts ever since. Some journeys leave pawprints on your soul - and Pip’s is one of them. 🐹✨

💚 A Busy Day at the Vet 💚

Today we had another four piggies at the vet, and thankfully everyone made it home safely.

Cookie and Waffle both have small ovarian cysts which we’ll continue to monitor. Waffle has also been having ongoing issues with her incisors, which have become brittle and prone to breaking.

My biggest concern recently has been Cookie. She arrived in our care with a suspicious lump that has been worrying me for some time. Testing showed some cancerous cells, so today we had the lump surgically removed (second photo for those interested).

Ivy, who is kindly sponsored by Bonnie, also visited the vet today and received a Suprelorin implant to help manage her hormonal issues.

Our fourth patient was our long-term medical girl, Smiggle, who is kindly sponsored by Helene. Smiggle is now receiving palliative care, and our focus remains on keeping her comfortable, happy and enjoying all of her favourite foods.

A special thank you to Cookie and Waffle’s previous owner, who continues to sponsor the girls, and to all of our sponsors who help make days like today possible. Along with Dr Cj for her care and photos and the team Fur Life Vet Caboolture

Four piggies, multiple procedures, one very tired rescue mumma… but everyone is now safely back home. 🥰

Early this morning, at 1:30am in fact, Pearl welcomed two beautiful baby girls into the world - and we were lucky enough to capture part of the birth on video. 🥰

Pearl was kindly sponsored and named by Kylie through our Sponsor & Name a Mumma program. As many of you know, Pearl arrived as part of the recent intake of 61 guinea pigs.

Pearl is missing one of her front legs. While we can’t know with absolute certainty what happened, both Dr CJ and I believe it may have been related to the wire flooring these guinea pigs had been living on prior to coming into our care.

Despite this, Pearl handled the birth like a champion and delivered two healthy baby girls. 💚

Mum and daughters are all doing well and are currently resting, eating, and enjoying some well-deserved peace and quiet.

It’s always a relief to see a healthy delivery, especially with so many pregnant mummas arriving in our care recently. Seeing Pearl overcome her disability and safely bring two babies into the world is something truly special.

A huge thank you to Kylie for sponsoring Pearl and helping support her journey.

Please join us in congratulating this brave little mumma and welcoming her two daughters to the Lair! 🐹💕🐹
