Mr Runt and Warrior, two of our recent surrenders, also visited the vet this week.
Both are showing signs of neurological issues, and at this stage there is concern these may be congenital in nature.
We know that their father managed to gain access to their mother through a C&C enclosure, both being closely related. Unfortunately, when close relatives are bred together, the risk of inherited defects and developmental abnormalities increases significantly.
Mr Runt also occasionally makes a loud grinding sound. We paid particular attention to his teeth during the examination, but thankfully they are currently in good condition. For now, there is no obvious dental cause for the noise, though we’ll continue to monitor him closely.
At this stage, we’ve been advised to monitor both guinea pigs over the next month before making any decisions about their long-term care. Some conditions can become clearer as they mature and settle.
If their neurological issues prove to be ongoing, they will likely become permanent medical residents here at the Lair. In that case, we may look at having Mr Runt desexed so he can safely live with Warrior long-term.
For now, they’re comfortable, happy, and receiving all the care they need while we learn more about what the future holds for them. 💚
