🌾 Welcome back — and hello 2026

We hope everyone has enjoyed a well-earned break over the Christmas and New Year period.

As we ease back into the year, we’re looking forward to reconnecting with growers, trial hosts, sponsors and partners, and continuing the work that supports profitable and sustainable farming across the Esperance Port Zone.

Here’s to another year of learning, collaboration and working together in the paddock and beyond. 🌱

We’re glad to be back — and we look forward to working with you in 2026.

💧 From 1.5 mm of rain to reliable dam water — and now less evaporation too

At Mt Ridley, SEPWA is showcasing how layered, practical water solutions can significantly improve on-farm water capture and storage.

✔️ Second-hand CBH tarps lining part of the dam catchment have transformed it into a surface that sheds water after just 1.5 mm of rainfall
✔️ A Daisy Dam Cover has now been installed to reduce evaporation and protect every drop once it’s captured

Together, these approaches demonstrate how growers can:
💧 Capture more water from smaller rainfall events
💧 Store it more efficiently
💧 Build resilience into their water systems, especially in drier seasons

🌾 In memory of Mark Mudie

SEPWA extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Esperance Port Zone grower Mark Mudie, who tragically lost his life while fighting a fire on his farm and neighbouring properties on 1 December 2025.

Mark was a respected member of our farming community, and his loss is felt deeply across the Esperance Port Zone.

We also acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the volunteers who responded to the fire — neighbours, farmers and emergency responders who stepped forward in service of their community. Their willingness to act in the face of danger reflects the strength, care and solidarity that defines our region.

Mark’s funeral will be held on Friday 19 December at the Ravensthorpe Entertainment Centre on Hopetoun Road, commencing at 2pm.

Our thoughts are with all those grieving, and with everyone who stood alongside Mark on that day.

🌾 Ready to see how the varieties stacked up this season?

Harvest might be wrapping up, but the results are just getting started — SEPWA Variety Trial data is now rolling in across the Esperance port zone.

A huge thank you to our grower hosts who opened their paddocks, shared their time, and backed independent, local results through wet seasons, dry seasons and everything in between. Your support makes this program possible. 🙌

We also acknowledge CBH for analysing the grain quality samples from the trials and making this data available — a key part of the harvest team effort that helps turn paddock strip trials into reliable, local insights. 👏

📌 Early results are in, with yield and grain quality data now being compiled, analysed and uploaded to the SEPWA website.
🔎 Check back as more results land.

🧰 As harvest rolls on it’s the little checks that keep the big picture safe.

A quick header blow-down before lunch. A bearing check before the next paddock. Extinguishers topped up and in reach.

Look after your machines, look after each other, and take five when you need to.
We’re all in this together.

What if your farm was ‘banking’ Nitrogen…and you could prove it?

In this week’s episode of Making the Call: Farming Decisions in WA, WANTFA Executive Officer Amanda Abou Rjeily sits down with Hines Hill grower Cam Gethin to unpack Nitrogen decisions in WA cropping systems.

Cam shares how he’s using real evidence of Nitrogen banking on his farm to de-risk each season’s N strategy — and why the RiskWi$e trial work is changing the way he budgets fertiliser.

“I am trying to get a budget for ‘N’ based on how much I put on, how much goes out in the truck, volatilisation and how much has been banked — which we are proving occurs in this area from our RiskWi$e trials,” Cam says.

A practical, grower-focused conversation that’s well worth the listen.
