When I first read this quote I immediately thought about the training side of pet ownership & how the process can test our limits/patience but how amazing it is when things start falling into place, but when I thought about it longer I actually thought about some of our animals who have/had been with us for longer periods of time.

All of these animals came into our care through no fault of their own, but for one reason or another they weren't deemed to be 'desirable' pets and stayed in our care for months (and in some cases, years) without a single inquiry. With almost every one of these gorgeous creatures we were utterly confused as to why this was the case, why no one could see their pure little hearts, the unspoken stories in their eyes, their longing for love & safety, their potential for growth & bonding.

This can be one of the hardest parts of rescue. Seeing an animals worth when no one else can. It can be so frustrating, upsetting & disheartening, but as time goes on I'm starting to realise that having to wait isn't always bad. Most of the time, they're just waiting on their perfect families to find them. A few names spring to mind (some are from our facility in Maitland, some are from when we were at the Erina facility);
- Sarge. Was at the Erina facility for 229 days before an amazing family found him & adopted not only Sarge but his best friend who he met in care; Jax
- Flick. Was at the Erina facility for over 240 days before an amazing family adopted her
- Abigail. Was at the Erina facility for 167 days before our amazing volunteers finally gave in to their hearts & adopted her
- Flick. Was at the Maitland facility for over 90 days before be adopted by an amazing couple who fell in love with her instantly
- Destiny, Sassy & Lionel. Maitland facility, who were all in care for 730 days, 862 days & 862 days respectively before being adopted together by an amazing woman who renovated a huge area for the cats to have indoor & outdoor

While the wait for these kids was long & bitter.. their results were the sweetest fruit ever tasted.

Now when we have animals at the facility who are being overlooked, I try to remember the ones who waited & found their perfect home.. afterall.. good things come to those who wait!

❤️ ZAPPA'S HOME... AND IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. ❤️

This will hopefully be our final update on little Zappa, and what a wonderful update it is.

Zappa is home.

Yesterday we received the message we'd all been hoping for from the wonderful team at Raymond Terrace Veterinary Hospital:

"He was the happiest boy this morning, so bright and alert and more than ready to go home."

Those words absolutely made our day.

Jeffery was there waiting to take his little mate home, and seeing the photo of them together outside the vet clinic reminded us exactly why we all fought so hard for this little boy.

For now, Zappa's road to recovery continues.

He'll return to the vet in 10–14 days to have his sutures removed. Our biggest hope now is that his wounds continue to heal well. Bite injuries can sometimes develop infections days after the attack, but thankfully Zappa is on antibiotics to give him the very best chance of a smooth recovery.

One thing every member of the veterinary team commented on was the incredible bond between Zappa and Jeffery.

The love those two have for each other is undeniable.

There are so many people we'd like to thank because without every one of them, the outcome could have been very different.

❤️ To the officers from Waratah Police - thank you for hearing the commotion, running towards danger instead of away from it, getting Zappa away from the attacking dogs and rushing him to the Animal Referral & Emergency Centre. Your quick thinking undoubtedly saved his life.

❤️ To the team at AREC - thank you for immediately stabilising Zappa and ensuring he received the emergency treatment he desperately needed.

❤️ To the incredible team at Raymond Terrace Veterinary Hospital - thank you for staying back to receive Zappa, taking over his care, stabilising him, preparing him for surgery and giving him every chance to make it home.

And finally...

❤️ To our amazing community.

Thank you to every person who donated.

Thank you to every person who shared his story.

Thank you to every person who left words of encouragement and hope.

You refused to let a little dog lose his life simply because his owner didn't have $5,000 immediately available for emergency surgery.

That compassion is something truly special.

Over the past few days we've also received a number of questions, so we'd like to answer a couple of the most common ones.

"Why are the vets so expensive?"

The simple answer is that veterinary hospitals have enormous costs to keep their doors open. Highly trained staff, specialist equipment, medications, emergency facilities, operating theatres and around-the-clock care all come at a significant cost. We are incredibly fortunate to have veterinary professionals willing to dedicate their lives to saving animals when every second counts.

"Why aren't the owners of the attacking dogs paying?"

Unfortunately, it isn't as simple as sending someone a bill. Matters like these often become civil proceedings, which can take considerable time to resolve. Even then, there is no guarantee that the responsible party has the financial capacity to pay.

When an animal arrives needing life-saving treatment, they can't wait weeks or months while those questions are sorted out.

They need help immediately.

Some comments also suggested that Jeffery or Leah had somehow done something wrong.

They didn't.

Zappa was on a lead.

Leah was simply walking him home after visiting Jeffery in hospital.

Sometimes terrible things happen despite people doing everything right.

We also received criticism for running a fundraiser.

To those people, I simply say this...

I'll never apologise for helping an animal in need.

Someone reached out because they had nowhere else to turn.

A little dog needed urgent surgery.

We had the ability to help.

So we did.

There was no hidden agenda. No ulterior motive. Just a determination to give one little life the chance it deserved.

If this fundraiser has taught me anything, it's just how extraordinary this community truly is.

The overwhelming majority of people chose kindness over criticism.

Compassion over judgement.

Hope over negativity.

The beautiful comments defending Jeffery, supporting Leah and standing beside Zappa reminded me that the days of animals being seen as "just a dog" or "just a cat" are long gone.

They're family.

And that's exactly how this community treated Zappa.

We haven't yet finalised the total amount raised, but we can confirm that both veterinary hospitals have been paid.

Should there be any funds remaining after all of Zappa's veterinary expenses have been met, those funds will remain in our community veterinary assistance programs, helping families through initiatives such as our subsidised desexing program, emergency veterinary assistance and pet food bank.

Once again, from the bottom of our hearts...

Thank you for believing that every life matters.

Thank you for helping write the happy ending that Zappa so deserved.

Now go home little mate... you've earned it. ❤️

❤️ ZAPPA UPDATE ❤️

Hello our amazing community,

We wanted to take a moment to update everyone on our brave little fighter, Zappa.

Firstly, thank you.

To every single person who has donated, shared his story, sent messages of support or simply kept him in your thoughts... thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness has meant that Zappa has been given the opportunity to fight, and we cannot express how grateful both we and his owner, Jeffery, are.

Now for the update...

❤️ Surgery went well!

One of the biggest concerns was that Zappa may have suffered a broken leg, however we're incredibly relieved to share that there are no fractures.

Instead, the muscle that had been torn during the attack has been successfully reattached.

Although he's doing really well, Zappa wasn't quite ready to come home today. He is still receiving intravenous fluids and being closely monitored by the wonderful team at Raymond Terrace Veterinary Hospital.

We're hopeful that, if everything continues to go well overnight, our little man will be able to head home tomorrow.

He's sore.

He's tired.

But he's also proving once again just how incredibly tough he is.

What an absolute little fighter. ❤️

We'll continue to keep everyone updated as we receive more news.

Thank you again for standing beside Zappa and helping to give him the chance he deserves. Every donation, every share and every kind word has reminded us once again what an incredible community we have behind us.

❤️ HE FOUGHT HIS WAY HOME... NOW HE NEEDS US TO FIGHT FOR HIM. ❤️

Many of you will remember little Zappa.

He's the little dog whose story captured so many hearts when he went missing for months. Against all odds, he was finally found and reunited with his owner, Jeffery. It was a moment many of us will never forget.

Back then, Jeffery was homeless and doing everything he could just to survive, but he never stopped loving or searching for his little mate.

Since then, life had finally started to turn around.

Jeffery found a home. He worked hard to rebuild his life. Zappa was back where he belonged. Things were finally looking up.

Then, in the blink of an eye... everything changed.

Just two days ago Jeffery became seriously unwell and was admitted to the Mater Hospital with complications from his gallbladder. While he was in hospital, his friend Leah kindly stepped in to care for Zappa.

Yesterday, after visiting Jeffery in hospital, Leah was simply walking Zappa home on his lead when two large dogs suddenly rushed from a nearby property and attacked.

In a desperate attempt to save him, Leah scooped Zappa into her arms, but the dogs were relentless. They bailed her up, ripped him from her grasp and took off with him.

The screams coming from little Zappa were so horrific that nearby residents called for help.

Thankfully, officers from Waratah Police heard the commotion and responded immediately.

When officers ran outside they found the two dogs attacking Zappa. They managed to get the dogs off him, picked him up and raced him straight to the emergency veterinary hospital in the police car.

Without their quick actions, there is every chance this story could have ended very differently.

We cannot thank the officers from Waratah Police enough for acting so quickly and giving this little boy a fighting chance.

Zappa was then assessed by the emergency vet where the initial estimate for treatment ranged between $3,645.40 and $5,178.80.

For Jeffery, already lying in a hospital bed, those figures were simply impossible.

Our rescue received the call asking if there was anything we could do.

Without hesitation we contacted Raymond Terrace Veterinary Hospital, who immediately agreed to take over Zappa's care. Their incredible team stayed back waiting for him to arrive so they could stabilise him, place him on intravenous fluids, treat him for shock and prepare him for surgery.

Right now, that's exactly where Zappa is.

He's bruised.

He's frightened.

He's in pain.

But if there is one thing we've learned about Zappa, it's that he is one tough little cookie.

He fought his way back to the person who loved him once before.

Now he needs all of us to help him fight again.

The attacking dogs are now in the care of Rangers, and we have been advised they may have been involved in previous incidents. While Leah thankfully escaped without physical injuries, she has been left understandably traumatised by what she witnessed.

This is one of those heartbreaking reminders that life can change in seconds.

One ordinary walk.

One unexpected moment.

One little dog whose future now depends on the kindness of strangers.

Today we're asking our amazing community to stand beside Zappa once again.

Every dollar donated will go directly towards the veterinary treatment needed to give this brave little boy the chance he deserves.

If we raise more than is needed for Zappa's treatment, every remaining dollar will stay in our veterinary fund to help the next animal whose life depends on urgent care.

Our rescue is a registered not-for-profit charity, so all donations over $2 are fully tax deductible.

Re-Introducing Diesel!

We know our gorgeous Diesel was only just adopted yesterday, but unfortunately his new family didn't think was the right fit for their family. This means our gorgeous kid has headed back into foster care & is once again on the lookout for his new loving family!

Diesel is an American Staffy x born 26th June 2022.

Diesel was originally taken to another facility as a stray & they immediately started reaching out for help to rescues asking to get him out under duty of care. They had taken him to a vet who immediately put him on antibiotics as his skin was broken & infected. As soon as we saw his photos we reached out offering our assistence. Diesel was underweight but that wasn't our immediate concern.. Diesel's skin was in horrendous condition. He was in such bad condition that every time he moved his skin would tear & bleed. He had scabs all over his body and he was itchy, swollen shut down. We immediately started him on Malaseb baths, gave him a Cytopoint injection to help with the itching, gave him a Bravecto incase he had mites, normal flea, worm & vaccinating. We also started him on paw paw baths & Pyohex leave in conditioner. While Diesel's skin has made great improvements, he still has a way to go with his rehab.

While Diesel was at the facility he was an absolute delight to care for. He's the perfect patient while treating his skin and he quickly turned into a wiggly, happy, smoochy boy. He's very gentle when taking treats.. although if you take too long getting them to him, sometimes he will stand on his back legs and plead with you eye to eye.. Diesel does get excited when on lead, so he can pull at times, however he is non-reactive to other dogs when he walks. Overall, he is an amazing boy, with such a gentle soul and we all fell madly in love with him.

After being at the facility for several weeks we felt Diesel would make more progress with his healing in a warm, loving, home environment. We organised our amazing foster carer to take him in & he's now been in care for several weeks. Since being in a home Diesel has been 100% toilet trained and has had no accidents inside. He's shown no signs of separation anxiety, in fact he spends most of his alone time laying in a fluffy bed, watching the world go by through the window. He's involved in a great love affair with the fireplace, his onesie pajamas & sleeping under the covers (also using a pillow like a human would). While Diesel does still pull on the lead, his carer has started desensitizing him to a head halter, so this will soon (hopefully) no longer be an issue.

It's clear that Diesel has become accustomed to his new pampered & cosy life and we believe he would love a home where he could continue to be an inside dog and treated as a cherished member of the family.

When Diesel was at the facility he tested fairly well with other dogs, but he was a little hard to read at times, where he'd seem like he was going to be a bit dominant & stand over the dogs he was tested with. He was however completely non-reactive when boisterous dogs were jumping towards him or bump into him. Since being in foster care Diesel has met several other dogs & has become best friends with a young Mastiff style boy who is a similar size to him. While Diesel can be a little selective with his friends, we believe he could live with another dog or be the spoilt only "child" at home.

Diesel has shown signs of prey drive towards small animals, so he will need a home with no cats or pocket pets.

While Diesel has made great progress with his skin's healing, this is still a work in progress. He does still need to have his leave in Pyohex conditioner to help keep his skin moisturised and he will need an owner who is dedicated in continuing his skin care routine until he is fully healed.
