Snake Mites – urgh! Identify and treat

Like dogs can get fleas on their skin, snakes can get mites. Snake mites appear as tiny black dots on the snake's body and feed on its blood. Mites lay eggs on the snake and in the substrate, and can multiply rapidly if left untreated.

If you notice mites on your snake take immediate action. If you have other reptiles in the same room, check and treat all of them for mites. There are a number of successful mite treatments on the market.

Head over to our website for the full blog and information on how to identify and treat your reptiles for mites (link below).

If you enjoy the blog and would like more information about how to use mites treatments with your reptiles, consider purchasing a copy of Pythons: Captive Care & Husbandry, by Steve and Zita Crawford. This can be purchased online globally from Amazon, or if you live here in Adelaide, head to our Reptile Creative store at 40 Furness Avenue, Edwardstown. You can also pick up an Insecticide aerosol spray in store, and our staff are always happy to answer your questions and provide expert advice.

Did you know that there are multiple species of Bearded Dragon?

Im sure most of you have atleast heard of the bearded dragon and many of you have likely even kept them as pets, given that the Central Bearded Dragon is the worlds most popular pet lizard species. But did you know that there are actually 6 distinct species (8 if we are including subspecies) of bearded dragon?

All 6 species live within Australia and each state (apart from Tasmania) is inhabited by at least one species.

The most commonly kept species of Bearded Dragons are the Central/Inland Bearded Dragon and the Lawsons/Downs/Blacksoil/Pygmy Bearded Dragon as they are the most well adapt species to indoor keeping.

*The photo attached is of a Pygmy Bearded Dragon which is currently available in store.

Did you know that many turtles, frogs and salamanders can technically breathe through their butts?

Due to their aquatic nature, these animals have evolved to have a secondary method of breathing!
Since these particular animals are cold blooded, they need external heat for their bodies to run efficiently. During the colder months of the year, these reptile go into a state of brumation (cold blooded hibernation) where their activity either drastically decreases or ceases all together.
Since these groups of animals are semi-aquatic, they had to develop a way to breath since the cold can hinder their ability to surface.

So how did they over come this problem?
Well fortunately for them, due to the cold slowing down their heart rate, metabolism and breathing, they require very little oxygen during this period.
So they developed the ability to absorb the waters oxygen through the blood vessels in their cloaca (their butts) to keep them going. 🐢🍑🫧

Did you know that a lot of reptiles dont need to blink?

Infact all of the worlds snakes are incapable of blinking!
This is because they lack eyelids.
Instead they keep the eye moist with a sealed ocular scale called the brille.
These scales are shed with the rest of their skin during their regular sloughing cycle.
This makes it particularly difficult to tell when a snake is actually asleep.

Most geckos also lack closable eyelids.
Instead they moisten and regularly clean the brille by licking it.

Many aquatic species such as crocodiles, turtles and even some lizards have transparent, closable eyelids that assist with vision under water.

Head over to our website blog page for ‘Your Guide to Choosing a Healthy Snake.’ (Link below) We want to help you reduce the risk of buying an unhealthy animal.

It is unfortunately impossible to guarantee that if you follow this guide you will never buy an unhealthy snake because as with any other animal, there might be a disease or issue going on inside the body that is not displaying any physical signs at the time of purchase. In this situation the seller is also unlikely to be aware of any issue with the snake.

However, what we can do is look for general signs of health to give you some confidence that you are taking home a healthy snake to the best of your knowledge at the time of purchase.

Check out the blog for how to make an assessment and what questions to ask before buying.
