Meet Dusty, a brave little 6 month old Kelpie who was referred to Dr Brett at South West Vet Specialist Surgery for management of a right coxofemoral luxation and greater trochanter fracture (a dislocated right hip and a break to the top of her femur bone). Dusty underwent open reduction and stabilisation of her hip luxation via toggle-rod stabilisation and her fracture was repaired with K-wires and a tension band wire (two small pins and a figure-of-8 wire).

Dusty went home the day after surgery for 6 weeks of strict rest while she heals, but was happy enough to take a quick photo with Dr Brett before she left. We are pleased to report that with the aid of her teddies and plenty of snuffle mats Dusty is on her way to recovery.

Rusty was referred to Dr Brett after becoming lame while chasing cows around the paddock. Radiographs revealed Rusty had a unicondylar fracture of the right medial femoral condyle – meaning that Rusty had fractured a part of his stifle (knee).
For any fracture that involves a joint, it is essential to restore normal anatomy and rigidly stabilise the fracture fragments to preserve joint function. Rusty underwent surgical repair using two cortical screws applied in lag fashion which compress the fracture fragments together and provide an ideal situation for healing. Fortunately, the ligaments and other cartilage structures within Rusty’s stifle were spared from major damage.
Rusty now requires 8 weeks of strict rest while his bone heals following surgery before he is able to get back out into the paddock after those cows!

This poor dog was referred to Dr Brett, our Specialist Surgeon, after being hit by a car.
Their regular vet did some great work to get him to us for further treatment and the repair of this broken leg.
Because we have a highly trained Specialist Surgeon right here in Eaton, this dog avoided another 2 hours in the car to receive specialist care.
If your pet needs specialist surgery, whether it be for a broken bone, cruciate rupture, tumour removal, or anything else that needs specialised training and equipment, chat to your regular vet about referral to South West Specialist Surgery based within the Eaton Vet Clinic.
Over the next few weeks we will start sharing some of the stories of the patients who come through our doors and the amazing work Brett can do.

Brett graduated from Murdoch University in 2015 and following graduation, he and his wife spent two years working in small animal general practice in Bunbury before heading to the UK for 12 months. Upon returning home to Australia, Brett commenced further training to become a specialist surgeon. Brett completed an internship in small animal surgery at Western Australian Veterinary Emergency and Speciality (WAVES) in 2019, and during this time he was accepted as a Member of the Surgical Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. He subsequently completed an internship, followed by a three-year residency training program in small animal surgery at The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University. During this time, Brett successfully completed a Graduate Diploma of Education, a Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies and a Master of Veterinary Surgery. Following completion of his residency in 2024, Brett returned to WAVES where he worked in a busy private practice referral surgical service. Brett successfully completed board certifying examinations and was welcomed as a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2025 and, as such, is a registered specialist in small animal surgery.
