By desexing your furry friend you are:

🐾Preventing Unwanted Litters: Desexing is an effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Dogs can become pregnant as early as 6 months of age, and cats by 4 months of age, so it is important to desex them before this time.

🐾Preventing Roaming: Desexing commonly reduces behavioural problems such as roaming, aggression, and urine marking in males. In females, it prevents mating behaviour.

🐾Helping Your Pets Stay Healthy: Desexed animals are generally less likely to suffer from conditions such mammary and ovarian cancer & pyometras in females and prostate problems in males.

🐾Keep Your Pets Around Longer: Desexing reduces the risk of pets developing numerous health concerns, including certain cancers. Research also shows that desexed animals can actually live longer.

If you're looking to have your pet desexed or if you want to know more about desexing, call our friendly staff on (02) 6800 1722 or email us at [email protected]

🐰P.S We can desex Rabbits, Ferrets and Guinea Pigs! 🐰

Are you a bulldog owner? Does your dog snore, have exercise intolerance, loud breathing noises, regurgitate or vomit regularly, or have interrupted sleep? 😴

Your dog may be suffering from Brachycephalic Obstructional Airway Syndrome, also known as BOAS!

This affects breeds such as French, English, British and Aussie bulldogs, pugs, boston terriers, cavaliers, mastiffs, shih-tzu’s, pekingese, and shar pei’s (and a few others!!).

BOAS refers to the obstruction of a brachycephalic dogs airways, that would otherwise not usually occur in other breeds. These obstructions are caused by:

1️⃣ Stenotic nares - these are very narrow or small nostril openings
2️⃣ Overlong soft palate - this interferes with airflow causing noisy breathing and/or snoring
3️⃣ Overly thick soft palate - this makes breathing tougher, and can get worse with age
4️⃣ Everted laryngeal saccules - pr*****ed part of the larynx, increasing airway obstruction
5️⃣ Swollen and everted tonsils - causes inflammation, further restricting airways.

Here at Orana Vets, we offer 5/5 BOAS corrective surgery for your dogs to help them not only breathe easier, but have an increased quality of life!

Please give us a call today, and book in an appointment with our BOAS Surgeon, Dr Mervin Pajate, for more information and to assess your pets need for corrective surgery! 🐶

❌ Chocolate ❌
It is extremely important to remember that chocolate and pets DO NOT mix! Chocolate contains a chemical compound called Theobromine, which in conjunction with caffeine, contributes to the reason chocolate is so toxic to our pets. Chocolates have various concentrations of these compounds, meaning NO chocolate is safe! If you believe your pet has eaten chocolate, or is actively displaying symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting, call your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY!

❌Hot cross buns❌
Hot cross buns generally contain raisins and sultanas, which are actually toxic to our pets! Consumption of raisins and sultanas can lead to sudden onset kidney failure, which can be deadly! If you believe your pet has ingested raisins and sultanas, or is actively displaying symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting, call your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY!

*Emergency/afterhours rates apply.

💚💛Happy Australia Day! 💚💛

Drs Vikki and Lydia were treated to a truly Australian experience last night when a local member of the public brought in a platypus that had it's foot entangled in a lure. Some quick research was conducted and the platypus was anaesthetised so the lure could be safely removed.

She will receive one last check up this morning before being released where she was found hopefully later today.

A timely reminder that, when using our waterways, it is important to be mindful of the amazing creatures we share them with!
