Keep changing the picture 🐾🤗
If you want your dog to understand and respond reliably, you will need to show your dog lots of different “pictures” - different places, different situations, different circumstances. This is called Generalisation or Proofing. It’s what helps your dog truly understand how to do what you are asking of them.
Tintin did a bit of formal Heel on our bushwalk today - we will be using this skill in the dog sport of Rally.
You might just want to practice some sit-stays, or maybe a trick. Remember, it’s not much use if your dog only understands how to do “the thing” at home. Get out and about and proof those skills 😉

A new walking trail to explore with Tintin today, and a little game of “Oops! I Dropped It” or Find The Lost Item from my online self-study course “Sniff! Scent Detection Games For Pet Dog Fun”.

A great game that utilises your dog’s natural scenting abilities, and one that can easily be played on lead, as shown here - we are walking in a Nature Reserve where dogs must be on lead.

See how Tintin completely switches his behaviour once I ask him to find my dropped item, and he goes from walking straight ahead, to scanning back and forth across the track, air-scenting (lifting his head up to catch odour) and then making a sudden swivel and change of direction once he picks up the scent of my dropped item! And he’s so pleased with himself to have found the head band I was so silly to have dropped!

Course includes 10 different scent based games plus an explanation of how odour moves and how to read your dog’s body language. Two hours of lecture material, no expiry date, only $29.99.

Thanks to everyone for supporting my small business 🥰

Tintin had fun today with some of the herding dog skills that are included in my online self-study course “Herding Games For Urban Dogs – No Sheep Required!”

Today we did going around clockwise (Come By) and going around anti-clockwise (Away To Me) as well as Go Through a gap (to separate off some of the sheep) and Over to jump a fence into a paddock.

See link into the comments to watch free previews and sign up for the course.

It’s a fun course to teach your dog some of the skills that working herding dogs need – plus learning to push a ball as a replacement for herding livestock! The training will help you gain off lead control, and give your dog mental stimulation and physical exercise.

No previous experience is required, and you don’t need a herding breed – any dog can learn the skills!

Course includes:
3 hours of video with 39 lectures. Only $29.99 AUD.

Learn activities that replicate the skills of working herding dogs such as circle clockwise and anti-clockwise, push a ball (in place of sheep), back up, jump over a gate, distance stop, call away from distractions, plus lots more!

My most popular course!

Truffle Season is approaching, here in Gippsland 🤗

Many of the local Truffle Farms use trained dogs to locate the underground truffles in the orchards.

Even if you don’t have your own Truffle Farm, this is a fantastic fun game to teach to your dog!

Here is Luigi, a previous client’s lovely Lagotto Romagnolo (Italian Gun Dog and specialised Truffle Hunting breed) locating and indicating the correct container holding a cotton ball with a single drop of Truffle Infused Olive Oil.

My online self-study course titled “Scent Detection For Dog Sports” covers all the foundational training that will show you how to teach your dog to do this! Although the course is geared towards the sport of Scent Work, you can use exactly the same method as shown in the course to teach your dog to find any odour - for Luigi, it was the Truffle Scented Oil instead of the regulation essential oils that are used in the official sport. But it’s not just about finding the odour, it’s also about communicating to the handler - Luigi does a lovely accurate nose point followed by lying down to clearly show the location of the target odour.

Here’s a fun game that Tintin and I played on our walk today 🐾🤩

I call this a Detour Fetch, and it’s just one of 14 retrieve based games I demonstrate in my online self-study course “Fetch! Retrieving Games For All Dogs” - see comments for the link to the course.

In this game, the direct route to the item is blocked, and your dog runs around a barrier and takes a “detour” to fetch their toy. This is a real brain teaser puzzle for your dog and helps stretch their ability to think and reason.

The entire course contains over 2.5 hours of video tutorials and as well as the retrieve games, it covers teaching your dog to fetch, to drop the toy, and to deliver the retrieve item into your hand.

Teach your dog to retrieve over a jump, to pose for a photo while holding an item in their mouth, to help with the laundry and much more.

Perfect for retrieving breeds who will benefit from using their natural instincts, but all breeds can learn these skills so it’s great fun for any dog.

Only $29.99 AUD with lifetime access to the material.

A good recall gives your dog off lead freedom and opportunities for exercise.

Do you want this for your dog?

Sign up for my online self-study course that will take you through all the training steps, with heaps of fun recall training games and video examples. Suitable to start with your baby puppy and continue right through to your adult dog. Or start from scratch to train or retrain an older dog.

40 lectures - 3 hours and 50 mins of video material - lifetime access to the materials - only $39.99 AUD

See link in comments - because that way it is more likely to reach you due to the way Facebook works ………🤦‍♀️

As the seasons change and we head into our Australian winter, I am thankful for the cooler weather.
It means that I don’t need to worry (so much!) about snakes, ticks or grass seeds. I can let Tintin play his searching games in the long grass. I can leave him in the car safely.
Which seasons do you prefer, and why?

Looking for input from my followers 🤔
Are you training your dog in the sport of Rally?

I already have an online self-study course that covers how to get started in teaching your dog Rally, including walking at heel, preparing for entering Trials, plus how to perform all the Novice level exercises. (Check out my website for links to all my courses www.dogsetc.com.au)

I have started filming a follow-up course that will cover the next step - preparing for Advanced Level Rally classes!
This course will include teaching the jumps, working off lead, as well as how to perform the Advanced level exercises (Australian rules).

I would love your suggestions to help me develop my upcoming Rally Advanced online course! What would you like to see and learn? What would you like the course to include? Is there anything in particular that you want help with at Advanced Level?

P.S. Also free to comment if there are higher level classes (Excellent, Masters) you would also be interested in studying 👍
