***Trigger warning - death and grief***
Photos in comments

We are sad to announce that Ringo was still poorly after 2 blood transfusions and vets told us the kindest thing to do would be to let him go 💔

Thank you to Dr Charlie, Dr Ania, and all the other vets, nurses and receptionists at Animal Referral Hospital - Essendon. Your job is so hard and yet you do it with such kindness and compassion for the animals, all while dealing with the likes of our founder Dan being a blubbering mess. You never signed up to be a counsellor, yet you become one by default. Your empathy at such a difficult time is appreciated and you know how much it is appreciated because you all foster too and know this feeling of loss and grief on a personal level. We all know we cannot save them all, but that doesn't stop us trying!

We are stiĺl piecing together what happened to make our sweet baby so sick. What we do know is he had IMHA (his body was attacking his red blood cells causing anaemia), but we do not know if this was primary autoimmune disease or secondary to another issue like cancer, a congenital bone marrow issue or some other disease/infection. Ringo's siblings are a picture of chubby and cheeky health, and are a daily reminder of how unfair life can be.

Ringo may not be with us anymore, but we know he would want his brothers and sister to have a home of their own soon. If you are looking for a super affectionate new furry family member, please consider Paul, John or Matilda. Check their profiles out on PetRescue: https://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/12054/Oscars-Rescue--Rehabilitation

To Ryanne Stuart-Huff and Ian Hoad - thank you for your donations! It was literally the difference of being able to afford treatment or not. We may be in debt now, but we know we did everything we could.

Thankfully, our FIP kitty Astrid did well in surgery and is a little less wobbly each day in her journey to beat FIP. And beat it, she will 💪

It is hard to be in a celebratory mood when you lose a beautiful soul like Ringo, who has been in care since only days old, but we will give you all an update on Astrid's progress soon!

The vet bills this week amount to $7,685. We are $5,835 in debt as a result. We have closed intake again because we have no funds left. If you can afford to donate or help in some way, please do. The sooner we clear this debt, the sooner we can help the community and cats again. If you cannot help physically or financially, you can still share this post! Every effort made makes a difference ❤️

Thank you everyone for your compassion during one of our hardest weeks to date x

Hello friends 👋 This is Dan, the founder of Oscar's Rescue & Rehabilitation.

Today has almost broken me - emotionally and financially, and by the end of today probably physically as well.

At 1am I headed to Essendon emergency with our darling ex bottle baby Ringo struggling to breathe. He has anaemia and we do not know why. So far hospitalisation and a blood transfusion has cost $5K.

Then at 7am Astrid our FIP kitty went to Bundoora for an endoscopy to remove a foreign body from her stomach, which is costing $2,225 at minimum, more if complications arise.

So it is still early and we have spent over $7K already today. The alternative is euthanasia. We don't want money to decide who lives and who dies, but this is the reality.

The rescue is not sustainable without donations. If you can afford to contribute, you will directly be helping save Ringo and Astrid.

Please, the cats really need you right now.

Our foster carer Maggie has woken up in an alternate universe! Hissy photo taken in March 2026. Since November 2025, Maggie has worked hard to rehabilitate Mumma Cat and today, mumma has finally voluntarily curled up on the couch at Maggie’s feet and is lapping up all the pats. Maggie may have also heard a purrrrrr or two! It’s been hard work but worth it!

All cats can be rehabilitated and are worth the hard work!

We love you mumma cat!

Astrid is a little warrior! She was almost comotose by the time she arrived at the vet - the stress of a car ride was almost too much for her little body.

Blood tests confirmed our fears - Astrid has FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). She was put on oxygen and IV fluids. Oral antiviral drugs were not doing enough.

We managed to source injectable antiviral Remdesivir and after oxygen and IV fluids she has taken lots of small steps forward - eating, making biscuits, sitting upright.

Astrid has 84 days of antiviral drug treatment ahead of her to beat this disease. She has the dry form of FIP causing severe neurological symptoms, but it can be cured and we intend to give it our best shot!

If you would like to contribute to Astrid's vet bills and medication, you can donate:

Please keep Astrid in your thoughts and send healing vibes her way!

We have soooo many wonderful adults waiting patiently for their forever home that we have discounted adults to $100 for the next month. This is a lot less than what we have spent on desexing, let alone microchipping, vaccinating, flea and worm treating and of course the expense of food and litter.

One wonderful feline seeking adoption is Luigi. He is young and healthy, with a lifetime of love to give a lucky person/household.

Meet Luigi, a Weribee street dweller. Luigi is shy when first meeting people, but he is otherwise a perfect cat. You can pick him up for cuddles and he is submissive to fellow felines. This...

We have some beautiful kittens who have been lingering in foster care through no fault of their own! To help them find their purrfect match, we have reduced adoption fees to $250 for our adolescent kittens. That is cheaper than Lost Dogs Home, AND they come double or triple vaccinated (fully vaccinated), so no immediate extra costs for owners until their booster is due next year!

One such kitty waiting patiently is Shadow. He loves to cuddle in bed and hunt toes under the doona.
