Want to know why chooks do this? It's called dust bathing, they dust themselves in dry soil.
Chooks dust bathe primarily to keep clean and healthy. It might seem counterintuitive, rolling in dirt to stay clean, but here's why they do it:

1. Parasite Control

Dust bathing helps chickens get rid of external parasites like mites, lice, and fleas. The fine dust gets into their feathers and skin, suffocating or dislodging the pests.

2. Feather Maintenance

The dust absorbs excess oil and moisture, which helps keep their feathers in good condition and prevents matting or greasiness.

3. Temperature Regulation

In hot weather, dust bathing can help chickens cool down. The cool soil or dust absorbs heat from their bodies.

4. Instinctive Behavior

Dust bathing is a natural, instinctive behavior—even chickens that have never seen dust will attempt to bathe in whatever substrate is available (like bedding or sawdust).

5. Comfort and Socialization

It’s also a comforting and social activity. Chickens often dust bathe together, which strengthens flock bonds and reduces stress.

Don't buy fancy nesting boxes for your chickens, just do this instead because God knows they won't lay in anything fancy at our place 😜

My house is looking more and more like a science lab everyday, but I have to say this little beauty wasn't cheap but works a charm to test fertility early on with great magnification to see every vein inside the egg.
Super happy to report this week's fertility for our Quamby Line here in Tasmania is at 90%, with lots of experimental eggs in the mix, including some I purposely left outside in the freezing temperatures overnight and some were 11 days old and all still fertile and developing. I have some more ideas I will test this week to increase this fertility even further.

The sky put on a little show tonight 💞 that soft Tasmanian glow while the chooks found their spots for the night. There’s just something peaceful about this time of day that makes all the hard work of breeding our Quamby's worth it.
Do your chooks have a bedtime routine too? 😄
Or are they the kind that never want to go in? 😂
