Watch out for wildlife on our roads 🦘🐍🐢🦌

We've seen a rise in road accidents involving kangaroos recently. And while our officers are happy to help a joey in need until the professionals arrive, it often comes with a sad ending for the mama 😭

For your safety and theirs, remember these tips when driving in areas with high kangaroo populations:
🦘 Slow down at dawn and dusk. This is when most wildlife is active.
🦘 Stay alert in all conditions. Scan for animals, especially in fog or rain.
🦘 Stay vigilant! Scan the roadside for wildlife and pay attention to crossing signs.
🦘 Adjust your speed to road conditions to avoid potential collisions.
🦘 If you see one kangaroo, expect more. Other mob members may follow!

If you find an injured animal, please call 136 186 or hop on over to > https://www.wildlife.vic.gov.au/injured-native-wildlife/help-for-injured-wildlife

🩺 MEET THE TEAM 🩺

Sarah - Head Nurse PetStock Delacombe

Sarah begun her vet nursing career back in 2017 and joined our team in 2020. Since joining our team, Sarah has broadened her repertoire of nursing animals to include: rabbits, ferrets, lizards, birds, turtles and various wildlife. Sarah shares her time at both & and always jumps at the chance to help out, particularly if ginger cats or kittens are involved 😸😺🐈. Being one of our nursing leaders alongside Thule, Sarah mentors our junior nurses, encourages our nurses to upskill and improve their education as well as ensuring our clinics provide a great standard of care.
When not in clinic and arms deep in kittens, Sarah enjoys hiking with her two blue heelers and cuddling up to her 3 ginger cats. We are missing Sarah at the moment as she is off on a well deserved holiday in Europe!

Thanks for all you do Sarah! 💙

Oh no we were a day late!
We love our 🐱🐯🧡

Did you know that approximately 80% of ginger cats are male?! This is because the gene for orange fur is carried on the X chromosome meaning males only need one copy, whereas females need two XX chromosomes.

When:
Widespread damaging winds developing during today, with blizzards possible for alpine areas.

Situation:
A strong northwesterly airstream will develop across the state early this morning ahead of an approaching frontal system in the west.

From the late afternoon a vigorous southwesterly airstream will follow the passage of the low, with the ranges and southern areas of the state at particular risk of widespread damaging winds. This flow will persist for 3 to 6 hours at any location before gradually easing.

For the Eastern Ranges:
Damaging northwesterly winds averaging 65 to 75 km/h with peak gusts around 110 km/h are likely to develop early this morning, before tending southwesterly on Saturday morning and easing by the afternoon.

For the Grampians and Central Ranges, including the Foothills: Damaging northwesterly winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are likely to develop before sunrise, tending westerly and continuing into the afternoon.

Winds may ease for a period in the early evening, before damaging southwesterly winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts around 110 km/h develop in the late evening. Winds will ease during Saturday morning.

For Western Victoria:
Damaging wind gusts around 90 km/h are possible in showers and isolated thunderstorms on and behind the front, beginning in the west mid-morning today before extending to northern districts in the afternoon, easing in the evening.

For Southern Victoria including Melbourne and Geelong:
Damaging southwestly winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h with gusts around 100 km/h are expected to develop in the southwest district from the afternoon, extending into the Central and North Central districts including Melbourne and Geelong during the evening.

Winds should peak over Melbourne in the early hours of Saturday morning. Winds averaging 70 to 80 km/h with gusts around 115 km/h are possible along exposed coastal towns, particularly west of Cape Otway and for the Mornington Peninsula and Bass Coast for a period. Winds are expected to begin easing from the west during Friday evening.

Blizzard conditions are forecast for parts of the Eastern Ranges above 1200m.

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11:00 am AEST Friday.

🩺 MEET THE TEAM 🩺

Dr Kate

Dr Kate joined our team in 2024 after completing her studies at Melbourne University. Having completed her bachelor's degree in ecology, Kate has a special interest in wildlife and exotics medicine. Growing up on a hobby farm, Dr Kate has a soft spot for any animal species really. We can usually find Dr Kate in dirty overalls attending to our on site farm calls or cuddling up to a patient whilst she writes her histories. Kate is such an asset to our team, always putting her hand up to help and putting her patients first. Kate currently shares her home with an elderly cat, two rats and a small flock of very pampered chickens.

Thanks for all you do Dr Kate! 💙
