😅so true!

Every gardener knows this trap.

You go outside to check one thing.

The garden has other plans. 😂

Patiently optimistic that these Malabar Chestnut flowers will develop into a harvest this year. I’m excited to try them, as I broke my own garden rule - tasting the fruit or nuts BEFORE planting them!! 😬
All my research indicates it will be worth it. 🤞I hope my taste buds agree!

I’ve finally had a complete day outside in the garden 🥰
It feels like forever since my last one😔
The freedom of bouncing from one garden to another, one job to the next without any time pressure or other commitments… just wonderful 💕🌱👩‍🌾 but wow how the time flies by!

I won’t bore you with what I managed to do, except to say I’m finally set up in my new potting shed, so I had some fun making different propagating mixes for a variety of potting projects. It was just great 😁but I wish I had this space years ago😕
You live and learn!

I’ve been a little quiet on the socials recently as I navigate a new ‘slow’ normal. I’ve realised it actually takes a lot of time and energy to realign a lifetime of habits and systems to a new ‘normal’. However I’m determined to succeed, so I have to be persistent and patient. Anything worthwhile doing takes time and effort!
So, as I meander slowly down this pathway I thought I’d share a few snaps of the past few months.

I love this 😍
Waste free seed pots - brilliant!
You will find me in the banana patch tomorrow practicing this new skill!
Hopefully I'll figure out the best leaf roll length before I de-foliage too many bananas 😜

Although it doesn’t look like water scarcity is an issue at the moment, we’ve planned contingencies into our household system and gardening system to maximise the times of plenty and surplus for future periods of scarcity and drought. Capturing abundance to utilise in the future.

These include obvious and immediate solutions like rain water tanks, coupled with slower, long term methods, like improving soil organic matter (SOM). Organic matter acts like a sponge and can hold from 5 to 20 times its own weight in water, depending on the exact material of organic matter. With our sandy soil, increasing its water holding capacity is an ongoing essential component of our management system.

How are we working towards increasing our SOM??

Through simple actions like adding compost, using a no-dig approach and cover cropping (always having plants growing in the garden beds - yes even ‘weeds’!).

We will hopefully be adding biochar to our soil management tool kit soon, which I’m hoping will help us improve in leaps and bounds in this area.

What do you do to store surplus for times of scarcity?

Where do you go to escape the ever-present-external-pressures of life, to reconnect with your inner self and allow for renewal and refocus? I try to capture the quiet early morning moment before a busy day begins, sipping a coffee on the couch in quiet reading, meditation, prayer and a gentle stretching routine. I am excited about an extended period of ‘escaping my normal’ this weekend as I head to the beautiful Sunshine Coast where I can spend more soul time 💕

After levelling the ground and installing a box with my lovely labourer’s assistance, it took 120 shovels of wet sand to fill the base for a little storage shed 😮‍💨
(I wasn’t trying to to push through the metal pain of this task at all😅)
Even with morning stretches I know I’m going to be a little stiff tomorrow 😬
Covering the sand to keep out the big and little critters till it can be compacted is my last task before packing up the tools for the afternoon (and maybe doing a few stretches)
I’m really excited to have my own little space soon…very soon😊🤞
