At no point should the words ‘anti bacterial’ and ‘horses sheath’ ever be uttered in the same sentence.

Anti-bacterial does exactly what it says on the tin - which is, be anti-bacterial.

Many everyday products have this in their description which is quite problematic when these products are also used to clean a horses sheath. Fairy liquid and hibiscrub are two common culprits.

Your horses sheath needs healthy bacteria, this healthy bacteria is heavily altered when we over clean, when we use harsh chemicals and also when we geld them and stable them for long periods of time. There is so much more to it than this, their age, their breed, health issues they may be suffering with.

We have to clean them because of the changes we have made to horses in domesticating them, not doing so can often cause the horse pain, but doing it too much, can cause serious issues for your horse, including discomfort.

Put down the dreaded baby oil, the horrid hibiscrub, the damned fairy liquid and stop over cleaning!! - I appreciate it may look ‘dirty’ from time to time but a sheath clean on a domesticated horse is a practice that helps avoid issue, it will not keep it clean forever - which is why once or twice a year is all that is needed - except in exceptional circumstances of course.

And I promise you, if you are cleaning it daily, weekly or even monthly and using harsh chemicals, it will only ever get worse.
