Following the holiday period, where there is more social activity for dogs, we have seen an increase in kennel cough cases coming into the clinic.
What is kennel cough?
Also known as canine cough; kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs, which can be spread by bacteria or different viruses.
It spreads easily wherever dogs mix - places like boarding kennels, day care, dog parks, grooming salons, or even through brief nose-to-nose contact.
Common signs include:
• A loud, dry “honking” cough
• Retching or gagging
• Runny nose or watery eyes
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite (in some cases)
While kennel cough is often mild, puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with other health conditions can become more seriously unwell and may require treatment.
What should you do?
🗣Keep coughing dogs away from other dogs
