“Tiny but Troublesome”

☀️ Spring and warmer weather mean ticks are on the move. Paralysis ticks, in particular, can be life-threatening for pets. They often hide in long grass, bushy areas, or even hitch a ride home on clothing.

👀 What to watch for: wobbliness in the back legs, vomiting, retching, a change in bark/meow, weakness, or difficulty breathing.

💪🏻 What to do: check your pets daily (including under collars and between toes) and make sure they’re on a reliable tick prevention. If you spot a tick or notice symptoms, seek veterinary help immediately.

👉 If you think your pet may have a tick, visit us right away — early treatment saves lives.

🎃 Halloween Watch Outs for Pets!

It’s spooky season, but not all the fun is pet-friendly! Here’s what to watch out for this Halloween 🕸️🐾

🍫 1. Keep Treats Out of Reach
Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, and sugar-free candies with xylitol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar. Keep the candy bowl well out of reach and remind guests not to share!
👗 2. Costume Caution
Some pets enjoy dressing up, but many find it stressful. Make sure costumes don’t restrict breathing, movement, or vision and if your pet seems anxious, skip it!
🕯️ 3. Decoration Dangers
Candles, cords, and fake cobwebs can be risky. Curious pets can knock over candles or chew on decorations, leading to burns or blockages. Use battery-operated lights and keep decorations out of reach.
🚪 4. Visitors & Escapes
Trick-or-treaters, loud noises, and costumes can be overwhelming. Keep pets in a quiet, secure room away from the front door. With doors opening all night, it’s easy for them to slip out, so double-check collars, tags, and microchip info before the festivities begin!

💜 Happy Halloween from the VRH team!

“Spring Wildlife Watch” 🐦

Springtime means our native wildlife is out and about — and while it’s wonderful to see, it can sometimes spell trouble for pets. Snakes, spiders, magpies, and even bees can all cause emergencies.

👀 What to watch for:

🐍 Snake bites: sudden weakness or collapse, trembling, dilated pupils, paralysis, bleeding.
Spider bites: redback bites can cause pain, vomiting, and lethargy; funnel-web bites can lead to twitching, drooling, breathing difficulty, or collapse.

🐝 Bee stings: swelling (especially on the face), pawing at the mouth, or difficulty breathing in severe cases.

🐦 Magpies: scratches, eye injuries, or wounds from swoops.

What to do:
Keep pets on a lead during bush or park walks, avoid known snake and spider areas, and check outdoor spaces before letting pets roam. If your pet suddenly collapses, shows swelling, or seems unwell after contact with wildlife, treat it as urgent.

👉 Snake and spider bites, and severe allergic reactions to stings, are life-threatening emergencies. Visit us immediately if you suspect your pet has been affected.

🌸 Toxic Plants 🌸

Many spring blooms are beautiful but dangerous for pets. Lilies (especially for cats), azaleas, tulips, daffodils, and sago palms are just some of the toxic culprits. Even a nibble or exposure to pollen can cause serious illness.

👀 What to watch for: drooling, vomiting, lethargy, changes in appetite, abdominal pain, or sudden collapse (especially with lilies in cats).

💪🏻 What to do: research before planting or bringing flowers inside, and keep bouquets out of reach. If you suspect your pet has eaten part of a plant, contact your vet urgently — don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

👉 Bring your pet to us straight away if you think they’ve chewed on something suspicious.
