Rio was referred for chronic spinal disease (IVDD). He had two massive type II lesions. We performed hemilaminectomy and corpectomy at two locations. He has completed a 6 week rehabilitation program at Cedar Mountain Vet Referral. He will continue strengthening his hind quarter muscles.
Today Rio turned 10 🎊🥳.
Happy Birthday, Rio!

Introducing Bear, 9YO male neutered handsome Labrador. Bear was referred to Cedar Mountain Vet Referral for a suspected spinal condition. Bear apparently developed non-ambulatory hind quarter paraparesis (could not move his hind legs). Previously, he was running without problem. Bear could not walk at the time of presentation, although he could stand up with ventral support. His lower back elicited pain, but thorough neurologic examination revealed neurologic function was sound. Orthopaedic examination revealed bilateral hip pain. Differentiation between lumbosacral disease and hip pain is challenging. Radiographs from the referring veterinarian showed acceptable level of hip congruity and coverage (not dysplastic) but Morgan signs. Examination under sedation revealed severe hip laxity and positive Ortolani sign. Bilateral hip joint pathology was suspected: overstretch (sprain) of hip joint capsule and/or capital ligament and/or hitting femoral head to the acetabulum, causing trauma and pain to his hips due to subluxation of the joint while he was running. Because the hip joint changes were mild, total hip replacement or femoral head and neck excision was not offered. Conservative management with extensive acute pain control in hospital and rehabilitation were recommended. Shockwave therapy was initiated. Thanks to our anaesthetist registrar Dr Dave for his extensive knowledge, with extensive pain management, Bear started to walk by himself next day. Bear was discharged to the owner 2 days later with full ambulation. Bear came back for rehabilitation the following week. Our rehabilitation veterinarian Dr Fran made an individual program for Bear. The video shows how good and strong he is now. This acute event occurred less than 2 weeks ago, when he was completely non-ambulatory. Now Bear got back to himself, enjoying his walk. Cedar Mountain Vet Referral exactly stands for this case. Appropriate orthopaedic and neurologic examination by myself, pain clinic by Dave, rehabilitation by Fran, and not to forget, all dedicated supportive team of Cedar Mountain Vet Referral. Although it is not a surgical case, I am very happy for Bear to be himself without surgical intervention. We love surgery but also diagnostics, pain control and rehabilitation to make patients happy. I am so proud of my team.

Quality of life decison ❤️🐕

Meet Ulysses, 14YO male entire Bichon X. He presented to Cedar Mountain Vet Referral for managing the huge mass on the dorsal aspect of the left metacarpals, known to be a grade 1 soft tissue sarcoma that has been debulked twice somewhere else and recurred. Due to the size and location, he had difficulty walking. We discussed the best solution to deal with the mass would be amputation, but he is senile and the owner wanted to provide a best quality of life. Given margins would be incomplete, knowing grade 1 soft tissue sarcoma (a low grade, slow growing tumour that is usually locally invasive with very low potential of metastasis), the decision was made to remove the mass without amputation. During surgery, the individual common digital extensor tendons were found to be engulfed by the tumour. The tendons were removed with the mass. A staged bipedicle skin flap was performed (a pocket was created on his chest skin and foot tucked in and skin sewn over the defect on the foot for 2 weeks , then the foot was released from the chest after skin partially incorporated/vascularised at the limb). The reconstruction was successful, although the flap became pigmented. Ulysses is now ambulatory and has no problem walking. We know that the surgery was not a great option in terms of curative intent and surgical oncology principle. The most important thing here is the patient and owners are happy. Ulysses enjoys his daily walk without difficulty now.

Happy birthday Mr. Bear 🎂🎉🥳
He is one of our physio patients who enjoyed being pampered by a massage, passive range of motion exercises and some laser therapy to help with his hip issues. He is a happy boy :-)

It doesn't have to be scary to visit a vet, especially when you have lots of cuddles and treats and a loving staff to take care of you. Just look at these happy patients wagging their tails while in hospital :-)
Meraki is our philosophy - To do something with soul, creativity and love.
To put something of yourself in your work.
To love what you do.

We hope all our patients can feel loved and be as relaxed as these 3 cuties (Rufus, Ruby and Luna) ❤️🐶🐕

Bella, 4MO entire female Yorkshire Terrier presented to Cedar Mountain Vet Referral for the right radial distal third diaphyseal fracture (broken right frong leg) after falling off a sofa. What is special about Bella is that her body weight was only 870g (even our Guinea pig was 1Kg)! These toy breeds have poor vascularity in the distal antebrachium, tending to develop nonunion (the bones will not heal) with conservative management (splint and cast). Moreover, relatively large implants cause bone resorption (stress protection by the implant) and a new fracture at the proximal end of the plate may develop. To prevent this problem, relatively small and longer plate (only 35mm length in this case!) should be used. We used KYON mini-ALPS system (3.5 titanium plate and 1mm cortical and 1.6mm locking screws) to stabilise the fracture. She was discharged to the owner next day with full ambulation.
