Attention Sydneysiders - SASH Northern Beaches treated two dogs last week with suspected rat bait poisoning. Both dogs had recently been walking around the Mosman Rowing Club and the adjacent park. This has been reported to council.

Please ensure you keep an eye on your dog when out walking to safeguard them from ingesting something they shouldn't, and never leave dogs unattended in off-leash parks.

Rat bait poisoning symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhoea , lethargy, bleeding (of the gums or nose, or blood within their stools / urine) seizures and difficulty breathing.

If you suspect your dog has ingested poison, please take them to your closest SASH emergency immediately.

I want to be clear. I am NOT discounting the serious issues we have with dog overpopulation and dog homelessness. I am very grateful to all the dedicated and hardworking people in shelters and rescues.

What I hope for is that we will change the practice of how we sterilize rescue dogs so we can prevent the unnecessary disease, suffering and heartbreak caused by the absence of s*x hormones.

O***y Sparing Spay (OSS) and vasectomy are the procedures that can be done in place of the conventional spay and neuter and based on research, they are safer and prevent a whole array of issues.

*Update as of 1/4/24 - 213 dogs and cats (155 dogs, and 58 cats) sick eating Purina, 57 of which have died.

Since 12/5/23 in the 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' group on Facebook there have been 48 dogs and 3 cats sick eating Purina, 10 of which have died. It seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I would stop immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall.

Purina may eventually say they will pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents.

Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall)."

Vaccine reactions can happen, and when we bombard a pet’s immune system with 6 different things at once, the chances of an adverse reaction increase. The safest interval between immunizations is about 3 weeks. Sometimes a combination vaccine is unavoidable, but you can ensure that it is given by itself when your pet is healthy, and not while under anesthesia.

Signs of a reaction may include:
- pain at the injection site
- fever
- lethargy
- lameness
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- anaphylactic reaction
- hives
- swelling
- tumor formation
- shock
- death

🛑 If you think your pet is suffering from a vaccine reaction call your vet immediately.

Side effects usually start appearing a couple of hours after the shot, but they can also take days, and even years, to appear. The most severe reactions are generally apparent within a few minutes.
Most cases of vaccine reactions are never reported to manufacturers and many are never reported to the veterinarian administering the vaccine. This contributes to the narrative that they’re universally safe and can be given needlessly.

🦠 High heat in the kibble manufacturing process does kill just about everything (including amino acids, essential fatty acids, and vitamins) EXCEPT mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins are poisonous chemical compounds produced by molds. They can be found in all types of grains and grain byproducts, including corn, barley, soybeans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, corn gluten meal, sesame seeds, rice, and wheat.

❓Why does this matter? Because many of these grains and legumes are used in the production of pet food.

The most toxic mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1, is the most carcinogenic naturally occurring substance known. Even in doses low enough to be measured in parts per billion, these toxins are potent enough to cause acute illness in susceptible animals. When consumed in very low doses over the long term, they can result in chronic health problems, including:
• liver cancer
• anorexia and weight loss
• liver damage
• neurological disorders
• decreased resistance to disease

Adding apiaceous vegetables (celery, carrots, parsnips, parsley) to the diet can help your pet eliminate mycotoxins.
