Keeping Arthritic Pets Comfortable This Winter โ๏ธ๐พ
As the weather gets colder, many dogs and cats with osteoarthritis can become stiffer, slower to rise, less active, or more uncomfortable at home. Winter can be particularly tough on ageing joints, but there are several ways we can help keep our pets comfortable and mobile during the colder months.
Signs your pet may be struggling with arthritis:
- Slower getting up after resting
- Hesitating to jump, climb stairs, or go for walks
- Limping or stiffness, especially in the morning
- Sleeping more than usual
- Reduced interest in exercise or play
- Behaviour changes such as grumpiness or hiding
- Overgrooming or licking at joints
Winter tips for arthritic pets:
๐พ Keep bedding warm, soft, and away from drafts
๐พ Use non-slip mats or rugs on slippery floors
๐พ Gentle daily exercise helps maintain mobility
๐พ Keep pets at a healthy weight to reduce joint strain
๐พ Consider ramps or steps for beds, couches, or cars
๐พ Warm coats can help some dogs during walks
๐พ Raised food and water bowls may improve comfort
Arthritis cannot be cured, but with appropriate management many pets can continue to enjoy a happy, comfortable quality of life.
