Flood Public Health Message

Just a reminder that the mosquitoes are out in force during flood events and the weeks that follow.
Mosquitos carry a multitude of viruses that are harmful to humans including Ross River Virus,
Barmah Forest Virus and Japanese Encephalotis Virus.
So please remember to be vigilant with mosquito protection. Wear repellant and cover up in long sleeves and long pants when out and about.
I will post in the coming days regarding diseases and illness in pets and livestock for which we need to be vigilante in the next days to weeks.
I hope everyone is coping ok and looking after each other.
For all veterinary emergencies please call us on 65662488 or 0447307676.

With the recent wild weather conditions co-imciding with sea turtle hatching season, we’ve had quite a few of these little guys being found on the beaches.
Some are fresh hatchlings that havnt quite made it to the water whilst others have made it out but then been washed back in by heavy swells.
Life for a sea turtle hatchling is dangerous enough even in good conditions with only 1 in 1000 hatchlings making it to adulthood.
If you find one of these little critters, please call us at the clinic or contact FAWNA on 0265814141 or Coffs Coast Wildlife sanctuary on 0266591900.

We’ve received many calls from concerned community members asking what to do if they find a stranded turtle in these dangerous conditions. First and foremost, your safety comes first. With strong currents, large swells, and debris in the water, we strongly urge everyone to stay away from the beaches and off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

If you do come across a stranded turtle, do not attempt to return it to the ocean. These conditions could be life-threatening for both you and the animal. Instead, follow these steps to keep the turtle safe until our rescue team can assist:

What to Do If You Find a Stranded Turtle
📞 Call CCWS Immediately – Contact our team for marine animal assistance on 0411 587 728. The sooner we can respond, the better.

🏠 Provide a Safe, Dry Space – Place the turtle in wet sand and well-ventilated container (such as a dry tub or box). Do not place it in water.

🚫 Do Not Feed or Give Water – Sea turtles require specialised care, and improper feeding can do more harm than good.

👀 Minimise Stress – Keep pets, children, and loud noises away from the turtle.

📸 Take Photos & Note Key Details – Send us clear images and information about the turtle’s condition, location, and any visible injuries.

🧼 Wash Your Hands After Handling – Wild animals can carry bacteria, so always practice good hygiene.

Once conditions improve, our team will arrange a safe rescue and transport to the Sanctuary for care and rehabilitation.

We truly appreciate the community’s care for our marine life, but please remember: your safety comes first. Stay safe, stay off the roads, and let’s work together to protect both people and wildlife during this extreme weather. 💙🐢

We still have our dedicated team onsite caring for all the animals onsite. Thank you to our amazing team for there dedication to the animals in our care.
