The year has barely started, and the weather is – as usual – playing a major role in fresh produce supply this week.

In fruit, the central theme is: heavy rain in northern Queensland over the past month. This has almost put the kibosh on the mango season. January/February is usually the peak of the Honeygold season, but most of the crop was lost to rain and flood. There are KPs on the market, but nowhere as cheap as they were pre-Christmas – and likely to finish up by the end of the month. Unless some growing regions in southern QLD and northern NSW were able to save their crops – in which case we may see a bump in February. That’s also the time when minor varieties like Palmer and Keitt pop up for a few weeks.

Other tropical fruit supply has also suffered, especially pineapples (nada) and bananas (more expensive) – but papaya and passionfruit are reasonably priced.

Don’t get us started on apples (stratospheric) – but then, the new apple season is only weeks away, starting with Royal Gala in early February from Queensland’s Granite Belt. Luckily, they were spared the heavy rain that plagued the rest of the state.

ImageBerry supply across all varieties should be ample next week – mostly from VIC (assuming the heatwave doesn’t create havoc), with additional blueberries from Coffs.

Closer to home, the Vella’s in Freemans Reach are picking seedless watermelon: expect to pay around $1.75 a kilo for a 5-6kg piece.

Grapes have come down in price by around 30% compared with pre-Christmas – they will fall further over the coming weeks.

Lastly, stone fruit supply across the board – including cherries – remains fairly strong, and prices are reasonable.

The central theme for vegetables is the exact opposite of Queensland’s pain: a 3–4-day heatwave across SA, VIC and NSW that has pushed some prices up already – especially for broccoli, cauliflowers, some leafy greens, wombok. Having said that, most other vegetables remain well-priced – and often cheaper than in December, especially green beans, snow peas, sugarsnap, corn, capsicum (reds are still $14.90 in Coles 😱), cucumbers, zucchini, lettuces, pumpkin and eggplant. Prices of onions and potatoes are finally starting to drop, after a horror show for most of 2025.

Kim and Laks from Golden Field are starting snake beans this week: they love the heat, and they’re perfect for a stir-fry or Sri Lankan curry.

Fresh produce prices usually rise in the lead-up to Christmas – mainly because of higher demand – but this year, prices have largely remained reasonable (if not downright cheap). But as always, there are some notable exceptions.

Most fruit is excellent value: nectarines, peaches, apricots, white grapes, mangoes, bananas, all berries (except blackberries), limes, papaya, grapefruit and watermelons are all good value. Rockmelons appear pricey, but they’re large.

But cherries – as is often the case in the week before Christmas – are starting to tighten. This is as much a function of stronger demand as it is of reduced supply: the further we get into the season, the greater the chance of crop losses due to wet & wild weather. Whilst growing regions in northern Victoria have had steady conditions, Orange and Young have struggled with rain and hail. Nevertheless, the quality is excellent – and still under $20 a kilo (with the 2kg box at $17.50/kg).

Apples and pears are still available, if you must… Also, pineapples remain scarce.

In vegetables, the news is even better: corn, broccoli, cabbage, beans, snow peas, sugar snap, continental cucumbers, basil, mint, all lettuces, celery, mushrooms, garlic, pumpkin, zucchini and all tomatoes varieties are cheap. Even onions and potatoes are edging down.

Still expensive: red capsicums and cauliflowers.

All-in-all, it looks like a bumper Christmas crop!

Blood Orange Vino Cotto

The Fig Vino Cotto has proved popular, so we’ve added the Blood Orange Vino Cotta. Use this as a marinade, or drizzle over meat, desserts or cheese.

New from Orchard Ridge: Tartar Sauce and Basil Pesto

The Lemon & Lime Tartar is the perfect dipping sauce for prawns, sashimi and smoked salmon – but also try it on a hamburger.
And Basil Pesto…what can we say?

In fruit, wow…it’s going to be hard to choose between all that great value fruit. Cherries, apricots, donut peaches, nectarines, blueberries, rockmelons, bananas, passionfruit, lychees, papaya: getting your 2 serves of fruit in daily should be a piece of …cake? Add the seedless grapes – the reds are still dear, but the whites are coming down – and berries, and you’re ready to feast whilst Christmas is still 2 weeks away.

By contrast, winter fruit is really tightening up: apples and pears are increasingly hard to source, and wholesale prices in some cases (hello Pink Lady’s!!) are triple the normal (peak season) price. At this stage, it is not at all certain that we will have apples over the height of summer.

Seedless watermelon has had its flush over the past few weeks. We think most members got one because we sold over 18 tonnes in W2548 when we had them for $1 a kilo in the Divvy Deal. Alas, this week they’re around $2.40/kg. Pineapples are also scarce to unavailable.

Vegetables are a mixed bag this week: local corn from Angelo Vella in Freemans Reach (Charlie Vella’s younger brother) and Manuel Xerri in Agnes Banks are both picking. Expect the odd critter and a bold patch at the tip of the cob…but the rest should be big, juicy and clean. Other local produce – from zucchini to tomatoes, and cabbages to lettuce – remain cheap, but prices are rising for cucumbers, some leafy greens and herbs, ginger, avocadoes and cauliflowers. Red capsicum will come down but not for another week. Or two. But green caps ARE cheaper.

New products this week: an avalanche!

Two completely new ranges, and a lot of range extensions this week.

Naked Life Non-Alcoholic Mixers

A new range from Australian maker Naked Life is ready to launch and compliments our non-alcoholic wine and beer offering. Available in 4 flavours:
Gin & Tonic
Italian Spritz (think Negroni)
Mojito
Margarite
Available as a 4-pack of 250ml cans for $12.57 (they sell for $15 at Woolworths).

Beyond Coconut

Coconut water has turned out to be surprisingly popular, especially after the introduction of Raw C (which was always going to be a one-off with a short BBD).
We are now introducing Beyond Coconut: available as a pure coconut water in 1L bottle and 320ml can, as well as a chocolate flavoured version. The 1L bottle retails for $4.30 (compared with $5.50 for Raw C and other coconut drinks in the supermarkets)

Shepherds Christmas Brownies

Complementing the Fruit Mince Pies and GF Slices, Shepherd’s have produced this heavenly (and heavy) Christmas-themed Chocolate Brownie. At $22.87 for a 6-pack, they’re not cheap – but boy, are they worth it.

One Rusty Jack additions

Alas, the Butter Chicken is sold out, and we haven’t had an ETA from the supplier yet – but we’re now adding Bolognese and Massaman.

Goldcoast Tiger Prawns: $25/kg

Pyrmont Seafood will be supplying us with 3Kg boxes of semi-thawed large tiger prawns for $75 a box (or $25 a kilo). Caught off the Gold Coast, they’re snap-frozen. We receive them frozen on Friday, but by the time they’re delivered on Saturday, they will be semi-thawed. You can safely re-freeze them, or portion them – leaving the thawed ones out to enjoy over the next couple of days, and put the frozen ones in the freezer for Christmas.

Remember, prawns usually go up in price as we approach Christmas. However, Pyrmont has agreed to lock in this price for the next 2 weeks.
