Today, once again, I have had to decline a post on a group from someone who believes they are in fact a registered breeder.
I then posted this on several groups. If anyone wishes to use this, please do so. There is a LOT of misinformation out there and the ones suffering are our buyers. They are being led to believe that their breeder is registered, when in fact, they are not
WHAT IS A REGISTERED BREEDER
A registered breeder is someone who is a member of a cat governing council. Each state has several who are affiliated with ACF or CCCA, plus there is also ANCATS. A registered breeder ALWAYS has a breeders prefix, for example mine is AMJANCE, and is able to issue pedigree papers for their cats.
DOES HAVing A BREEDER NUMBER WITH MY GOVERNMENT MAKE ME A REGISTERED BREEDER
NO! All this number does is make the government body aware that you exist, and if you have a number that begins with MB, you are in fact a glorified backyard breeder. Registered breeders are also required to have a number in some states, in particular Victoria
I AM A MEMBER OF NCPI or RPBA, AM I REGISTERED
NO! Unless you are a member of an applicable governing body and have a breeders prefix, you are just a glorified backyard breeder
If you are looking at a kitten from someone who claims to be a registered breeder, PLEASE always ask what their prefix is and who they are a member of. You can then verify that they are registered by contacting the applicable governing body.
