Why Every Raised Bed Needs a Worm Tower 🪱
A worm tower is simply a perforated pipe pushed into the centre of your raised bed — and it might be the most effortless thing you can do for your veg patch.
Deep, rich fertiliser. Worms digest kitchen scraps right inside the bed, releasing castings directly into the root zone — no spreading, no mess.
Better moisture retention. Worm activity breaks up compaction and improves soil structure, helping your beds hold water longer between watering.
Less waste, more life. Veggie scraps, coffee grounds and torn cardboard go straight in — turning kitchen offcuts into living soil biology.
A thriving ecosystem. Worms draw in beneficial microbes, improving soil health season after season with zero extra effort.
Feed it once a week, and your raised beds will feed you all season long. Simple, sustainable, and deeply satisfying — just like life at the cottage. 🌱

Why We're Planting Basil & Tomatoes Side by Side
Little Creek Cottage Garden Journal
One of the first things we've learned in our new garden: good neighbors make all the difference.
Basil and tomatoes are one of the most celebrated companion planting pairs for good reason. The aromatic oils in basil's leaves help repel aphids, whiteflies, and tomato hornworms — naturally, without chemicals. Flowering basil also attracts pollinators that benefit the whole garden.
We're tucking basil plants 10–12 inches from each tomato, pinching flower buds regularly to keep the foliage potent and working hard all season long.
It won't eliminate every pest, but as part of a natural approach to gardening, it's low-effort with real upside. And come August, we'll have fresh basil right next to our tomatoes — a caprese salad practically plants itself.
With muddy boots and hopeful hearts,

Little Creek Cottage 🌿
We scattered rocket seeds in the new garden bed just days ago — and the rain has done something truly magical. Tiny, bright green seedlings have pushed through the soil almost overnight, reaching up through the damp earth like they couldn't wait a moment longer.
There's something so quietly thrilling about this — the first signs of life in a brand new garden. We're putting it down to the lovely wet weather we've been having lately; it seems rocket absolutely loves a good drink straight after sowing. Nature at its most obliging!
Watching this little patch come to life is exactly why we started this garden. More updates very soon — we have a feeling things are going to grow quickly from here. 🌱
