🍖🐶 Why Ham Isn’t Safe for Dogs

With Christmas feasts in full swing, it’s tempting to share a little ham with your pup — but ham is actually one of the most common holiday foods that can make dogs very sick.

Here’s why ham is a no‑go:
- Very high in fat → can trigger vomiting, diarrhoea, or even pancreatitis
- Often salty → can cause dehydration and stomach upset
- Glazes and seasonings often contain honey, sugar, garlic, onion, or spices that are toxic to pets
- Bones (even “soft” ones) can splinter and cause choking or internal injury

Even small amounts can cause problems, especially in sensitive or older pets.

💙 If your dog has eaten ham and seems unwell, give us a call — we’re here to help.

🐶💛 Puppy Season at Snowy Vets! 💛🐶
We’ve had so many gorgeous puppies visiting us lately, and we’re loving every minute of it! Those first few vet visits are more than just cuddles (though we’re very good at those too).

Why early puppy checks matter:
- 🩺 Ensures your pup is growing and developing normally
- 💉 Keeps them protected with essential vaccinations
- 🐛 Sets up parasite prevention from the start
- 🐾 Helps build positive, stress‑free vet experiences
- 💬 Gives you a chance to ask all your new‑puppy questions

If you’ve recently welcomed a new furry family member, we’d love to meet them.
Book their puppy check and vaccines early to give them the best start in life.

🍫 Dangerous Foods for Pets—What to Keep Off Their Plate 🐾🚫
Some everyday foods can be toxic—even deadly—for our furry friends. With holiday treats and summer snacks around, it’s easy for pets to sneak a bite of something harmful.

⚠️ Foods to avoid:
- Chocolate
- Grapes, raisins & currants
- Onion & garlic
- Avocado
- Cooked bones
- Ham
- Walnuts & macadamia nuts
- Alcohol
- Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum and baked goods)

Even small amounts can cause serious illness. If you think your pet may have eaten something dangerous, call your vet immediately—early action can save lives.

💙 At Snowy Vets, we’re here to help you keep your pets safe and healthy. Please share this post to help spread awareness in our community.

🐍 Snake Bite Season: Know the Signs, Act Fast 🐾

As temperatures rise, so does snake activity—and that means increased risk for curious pets. Snake bites can be life-threatening, and symptoms may appear suddenly or progress over hours.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
- Drooling or excessive salivation
- Disorientation or wobbliness
- Sudden collapse or struggling to stand
- Vomiting
- Lethargy or unusual tiredness
- Paralysis

If you notice any of these signs—or suspect your pet may have encountered a snake—keep them calm and contact us immediately. Snake bites require urgent veterinary care.

📞 Call ahead so we can prepare for your arrival and act quickly. 64557800

☀️🐾 Warm Weather Alert: Protect Your Pets from Heatstroke! 🐾☀️

With the hot days rolling in, it’s important to remember that heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency for pets. Unlike us, animals can’t sweat to cool down—they rely on panting, shade, and hydration. When their body temperature rises too high, heatstroke can set in quickly and cause organ failure.

🚨 Signs of heatstroke to watch for:
- Excessive panting or noisy breathing
- Drooling or sticky saliva
- Bright red or bluish gums/tongue
- Lethargy, weakness, or collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhoea

🐶 Pets most at risk:
- Flat-faced breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Persian cats)
- Overweight pets
- Very young or elderly animals
- Pets with thick coats or heart/lung conditions

✅ Prevention tips:
- Always provide fresh water and shaded areas
- Walk dogs early morning or late evening, avoiding midday heat
- Never leave pets in cars—even for a few minutes
- Keep small pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, birds) in cool, ventilated spaces
- Use fans or damp towels for extra cooling

⏱️ What to do if you suspect heatstroke:
- Move your pet immediately to a cool, shaded area
- Offer small sips of water (do not force)
- Gently wet their coat with cool—not icy—water, focusing on neck, armpits, and groin

Contact your veterinary team straight away—heatstroke is an emergency and prompt care can save lives. You can call us on 64557800 for 24/7 emergency services.

Stay cool, stay safe 🐾

What a festive and furry way to kick off the holiday season!

A special shout-out to the man in the big red suit, our very own Dr. Colin, who was an absolute champion and managed to get some brilliant snaps with all the excited patients!

We've put together a little slideshow of the highlights. Keep an eye out for next year 😉

We hope these photos bring a little extra cheer to your Christmas! Happy Holidays from the entire Snowy Vets team!

🚧 Heading to Snowy Vets - Jindabyne? Plan a little extra travel time! 🐾

Due to roadworks near the new Jindabyne Education Campus, the southern end of Barry Way (towards Leesville Estate) is down to a single lane until early February. Traffic signals and controllers will be in place during school hours, which may cause minor delays.

If you’ve got an appointment with us, please allow a little extra time to get here safely and on time. We’d hate for your pet to miss their moment with our team!
Thanks for your patience and planning, we’re looking forward to seeing you soon 💙
