Last week was a very sad and challenging time in my house and it’s taken a while to be able to write this post.
On Thursday morning, little Bettsy, the fawn pied girl, was a little sleepy at the 5 am feed. She had a small feed but wasn’t her normal gutsy self. At the next feed she didn’t suckle at all so off to the vet she went.
After an examination and some tests, the vet advised that she had aspirated some of Elvira’s milk and had Aspiration Pneumonia. She went straight into intensive care, with Oxygen and Antibiotic treatment.
For two days she battled but her little body was unable to recover and on Saturday morning she passed away at 4 weeks of age.
At this stage I would never have expected aspiration, I was getting ready to introduce solids, and my heart was broken at the loss.
It’s been incredibly hard to come to terms with this as I’ve been at every feed, day and night, and feel so bonded with each of these babies. I’m so grateful to Baldivis Emergency Vet Hospital for their wonderful care of Bettsy, and for their empathy in dealing with an extremely emotional me.
