This is our patient Rusty, a much-loved elderly ginger cat 🐾
Here you can see an x-ray of his lower molars. The teeth marked with arrows didn’t look too alarming above the gum line, but underneath they were badly diseased.
Rusty has feline resorptive lesions – a common and painful condition where a cat’s own body starts to eat away at the teeth. The middle tooth in this image also shows bone loss around the roots.
The tricky part is that so much of this disease is hidden below the surface – a bit like an iceberg 🧊. What we can see in the mouth is often only a fraction of the problem.
That’s why dental x-rays are essential. They let us see the full picture so we can treat painful teeth that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Rusty has had dentisty today and will feel much more comfortable now that these teeth are treated – helping him get back to enjoying life without a sore mouth. ❤️🐱
